Touching Gus: Best Live Band In GR
  • Tip Rating:
  • Touching Gus is the premier band on the GR Live Music circuit. The have the perfect blend of classic rock, alternative and originals that leaves the audience salivating for more. Frontman Nate Mehren continually keeps the audience involved in the show, guitariest Lattie Zimmerman always has a smile on his face, Terry and Mike combine to form one of the deadliest rhythm sections (bass and drums respectively) around and keyboardist Brandon Ward brings it all home. Their originals are more than worthy of just the local scene and when they belt out "Michigan Calls," you truly feel the vibe of the soul of Touching Gus.

Casual....just a good old fashioned rock n' roll band.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Gardella's is a great place to meet up with some friends for drinks. It's always packed on weekends.

Club 1894 is the place to go for dancing. DON'T wear jeans.

    The BOB: The BOB
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just about anyone who's been in Grand Rapids knows about the BOB. The BOB stands for Big Old Building, and is pretty much in the center of things in downtown Grand Rapids.

The BOB has just about enything for every taste. Food, dancing, live bands, an arcade, a brewery, pool tables, outdoor decks, and a comedy club.

It's such a big place that just about every type of person can be found here, especially with the Van Andal Arena next door.

On avaerage though most people are nicely dressed because they're there for dates/business dinners/shows.

    Opus 1894: Opus 1894
  • Tip Rating:
  • Old Town's first sophisticated multi-level night spot offering a diverse, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Experience the Dragon Fly Room featuring progressive Japanese cuisine. Cover charge is $5 during the week and $10 on weekends.

No jeans here! This is yuppy land. Dress up.

If you're in GR and looking...
If you're in GR and looking for the nightlife, check out the BOB (Big Old Building) in Downtown Grand Rapids. They will have whatever you're in the mood for.
The BOB is a three story 'night-spot mall.' It offers fine dining, dance clubs, a comedy club, an arcade, pool hall, burger joint, tobacconist, and a bar. All this under one roof.

The dress code depends on where you're headed. The fine dining requires dress attire, while the arcade and pool hall normally finds their patrons wearing jeans. Dress according to your destination.

The BOB, downtown, is the most...
The BOB, downtown, is the most popular night spot in the area. It has 4 floors of restaurants, clubs, and a comedy revue. They charge cover after 9pm. There are clubs and bars all over the place downtown, but the best are located near the arena (and the BOB). I recommend The BOB, Taps, Flannigans, and J. Gardellas. Bulls Head is good, but VERY noisy. Opus is very popular with aging yuppie types. Stay away from any bars in the Amway Grand Plaza complex, and those on Division Ave. (they advertise a lot, but are dull, dull, dull). Go to Mulligans and The Intersection in Eastown for the best live music and the grunge scene. The bars and clubs in the suburbs tend to attract a redneck crowd.
The BOB is fun because there is so much to do in one building.

Most are dressy-casual... khakis and a shirt.

    48 West: Nighttime elegance
For those of us GR people that were around when this was The Duece this popular middle aged bar has certainly caught on in the downtown area. With live music on the weekends and the classier look than before 48 West is an icon. It is connected to Taps if you want a change in scenery.

No real dress code... but everyone is usually dressed business casual at least. I have worn jeans in there though... it's no big deal.

Kale's Korner Bar: Cheapest Bar downtown
This is one of the best bars i've been to because of the huge cross section of people there. It's not like some bars where there are only college students or only cowboys or only leisurely adults. Everybody's there and everybody's drinking on the cheap, enjoying the juke box, singing karaoke, or playin' pool.

Wear whatever you want to this place.
