  • Touching Gus: Best Live Band In GR

    by bdblank27 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Touching Gus is the premier band on the GR Live Music circuit. The have the perfect blend of classic rock, alternative and originals that leaves the audience salivating for more. Frontman Nate Mehren continually keeps the audience involved in the show, guitariest Lattie Zimmerman always has a smile on his face, Terry and Mike combine to form one of the deadliest rhythm sections (bass and drums respectively) around and keyboardist Brandon Ward brings it all home. Their originals are more than worthy of just the local scene and when they belt out "Michigan Calls," you truly feel the vibe of the soul of Touching Gus.

Dress Code: Casual....just a good old fashioned rock n' roll band.

    The BOB: The BOB

    by hoser_71 Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Just about anyone who's been in Grand Rapids knows about the BOB. The BOB stands for Big Old Building, and is pretty much in the center of things in downtown Grand Rapids.

The BOB has just about enything for every taste. Food, dancing, live bands, an arcade, a brewery, pool tables, outdoor decks, and a comedy club.

Dress Code: It's such a big place that just about every type of person can be found here, especially with the Van Andal Arena next door.

On avaerage though most people are nicely dressed because they're there for dates/business dinners/shows.

Me and friends at the grill (bad photographer!)

I came here because it was the only spot that seemed to happening in town. Reminded me very much of a college bar, very young crowd, but they played very good music and I had a great time. Awesome room to move in with a great patio as well.

Dress Code: Decent dress- no baggy crap.

  • The BOB: The oldest yet nicest bar in GR

    by themac2000 Updated Feb 22, 2005
    The BOB - stands for

This place is incredibly beautiful. If you have never been to GR before you have to at least visit this place.
There are four floors (including the basement) -- much of which are restuarants. This place normally attracts crowds in their 30's and 40's so I don't really go in there much. There are comedy shows on the third floor Thursdays through Saturdays. Totally worth seeing... check out every floor.

Dress Code: Dress nice... no baseball hats or tennis shoes

  • 48 West: Nighttime elegance

    by themac2000 Written Feb 22, 2005
    48 West

For those of us GR people that were around when this was The Duece this popular middle aged bar has certainly caught on in the downtown area. With live music on the weekends and the classier look than before 48 West is an icon. It is connected to Taps if you want a change in scenery.

Dress Code: No real dress code... but everyone is usually dressed business casual at least. I have worn jeans in there though... it's no big deal.

  • The Black Rose: Irish it up a wee

    by themac2000 Written Feb 22, 2005

This place is the Ultimate Chill out place. The scenery is very elegant... good place for a first date for drinks. I have heard that the food is good too but have never tried it. Fairly expensive drinks... may as well buy a pitcher if you are going to stay for awhile. Mondays have a special... $5/pitcher for everything on tap... quite the deal!!! Totally recommend this place.

Dress Code: None: atmosphere is mostly casual.

  • Margarita Grill: Young fun

    by themac2000 Written Feb 22, 2005
Margarita Grill with patio on the side

This place is more of a low to mid 20's bar. A lot of specials here during the week. If you know what "beer pong" is they have tournaments every Thursday. (if you don't know I had never heard of it neither) Specials like $.25 drafts on Thursdays, live music on Wednesdays with $1 drafts make this a nice cheap way to spend an evening. Patio overlooks Van Andel arena in the summertime.

Dress Code: Most of the people here "dress to impress"... you'll see people in all atire though.

  • Taps: All the Beer you can imagine

    by themac2000 Written Feb 22, 2005
    Taps - Patio

With 32 beers on Tap you can't really go wrong. There are two floors to this bar with their different atmospheres... definitely worth checking out. Attached to 48 West.

Mon - Thurs nights Karaoke downstairs. Friday live music downstairs.
Thurs - Sat DJ and dance floor upstairs

Note... on weekends there is a $3 cover to go upstairs... and you might want to get there rather early (9:30 or so) to avoid waiting in line. (at least the line is inside :-)

    Dress Code: None

  • Z's: The biggest shot in Grand Rapids and latest menu

    by themac2000 Written Feb 22, 2005
    Z's

I have always loved this bar for two reasons.
#1. they don't serve their shots in shot glasses... but in whatever they have available. Hence a $4 shot is more like two and a half shots. Good warm-up bar for downtown.
#2. this place will serve a FULL MENU until 2:00am!!! It is definitely the latest serving bar in Grand Rapids as far as food goes. Good food and really late... can't beat that combo!!

Note: under a new owner tip #1 is sort of fazed out but the people that work there have worked there for a long time and understand and if you ask them for a big shot they will give you one.

  • Kale's Korner Bar: Cheapest Bar downtown

    by pearls187 Written Aug 8, 2005

This is one of the best bars i've been to because of the huge cross section of people there. It's not like some bars where there are only college students or only cowboys or only leisurely adults. Everybody's there and everybody's drinking on the cheap, enjoying the juke box, singing karaoke, or playin' pool.

Dress Code: Wear whatever you want to this place.
