Gemignani's is a gem, and a trip back in time, pre-Olive Garden! You'll appreciate the traditional Italian fare on offer here, a variety of Southern and Northern Italian specialities prepared in the manner of the Italian Restaurants I used to know when I was a kid, in the 1960s and 70s. It's small, intimate, and without pretense - but be sure to take some time and enjoy your meal here, good Italian food isn't meant to be rushed!
(Hancock and the Keweenaw Peninsula in general attracted a small but significant Italian immigrant population in the late 19th century. Many of the Italians who settled here were from the Piedmont, so at least they had seen snow before!)
I've only eaten here once, and already it's my favorite place to eat in the Houghton-Hancock area.
This Italian restaurant has the best food in town. The recipes have been passed down for generations to give the customer high quality food at a reasonable price. The non-smoking atmosphere is a pleasure in this cozy ristorante.
Favorite Dish: The Sesame Chicken Salad is delicious, the unique special recipe dressing makes the salad! Try the homemade ravioli too.
The best restaurants in the area are the following:
The Library (Houghton)
Ming Garden (Houghton)
The Michigan House (That's in Calumet)
These are places to absorb the 'local color':
Kaleva Cafe (Hancock)
Suomi Restaurant (Houghton)
They're nice places with good prices.
Favorite Dish: The Library: Do the 'Steamers' menu. The nut encrusted walleye is wonderful
Ming Garden: Sesame Chicken
AmEurAsia: go for the lunch or dinner buffet, they're great deals, or Sunday brunch.
Michigan House: Almost anything's good there.
