Downtown Houghton: Downtown Houghton
Michigan Tech University is located next to downtown Houghton, so the bars there cater to the college crown. The 3 main bars on the strip are the Downtowner (DT), Ambassador, and the Douglas Houghton Saloon (Doghouse). The DT is known for it's large patio, which overlooks the Portage canal. The Ambassador is known for it's large Fishbowls. The Doghouse is a smaller, quieter bar with an 'older' feel to it. All the bars are quite busy on weekend nights during the school year.
Dress Code: Very relaxed. No one gets too dressed up.
Keewenaw Brewing Company: Good For What Ales You
A recent addition to Houghton has greatly increased the availability of good fresh beer in this town. The Keewenaw Brewing Company has been in operation for a few years, and is already winning friends and converts to their interesting and tasty brews all over the great Northwoods.
Note that their operation in central Houghton is a true "microbrewery" and as such (by Michigan State Law) they do not serve food or other beverages. They do have peanuts, however! (Those wish peanut allergies should be forewarned, although there is a peanut-free zone in the bar.)
You might want to try the Pick Axe Blonde or the Full Gale Pale Ales, although they brew many other varieties as well.

The Mine Shaft and Rock House: Entertainment Complex of the North
If you're looking for a night of variety, the Rock House is the place for you. You can bowl, challenge your date to an arcade game, sing karaoke, or grab a bite to eat. The prices are reasonable and the menu is pretty standard fare- pizza, burgers, etc.
