Frozen Stupid Filmed at Tip-Up-Town U.S.A.
Houghton Lake may only be known by the locals and a few tourist who come every Freezing February to celebrate the annual week-long festival on the frozen lake, known as Tip-Up-Town, U.S.A.
This may not be an unknown event for long!
The world premiere of Michigan filmmaker Rich Brauer’s anticipated new movie, “Frozen Stupid,” will be held at the Pines Cinema on August 18th, 2006. “Frozen Stupid” was shot entirely on location at Houghton Lake and includes the Tip-up Town, U.S.A. 2006 festival.
“Frozen Stupid” tells the humorous tale of a cantankerous father, played by Academy Award-winning actor Ernest Borgnine (Marty, Poseidon Adventure, The Lost Treasure of Sawtooth Island, Barn Red), his bumbling but well-meaning son, portrayed by Escanaba in da Moonlight’s endearing Joey Albright, and fellow ice fisherwoman, Kimberly Norris Guerrero (Hidalgo, Seinfeld, Barn Red), who all share a joyous obsession for the age-old sport of ice fishing. Veteran Michigan actors from Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, MI, as well as hundreds of northern Michigan extras, have participated in the film.

Artistic Creations and Cultural Awareness
Houghton Lake and the surrounding small towns, are renowned for their antique stores and flea markets, yard sales and church thrift stores. From these sources, one can find all sorts of objects that can cheaply be purchased and 'redone' in various Arts and Crafts projects. All it takes is a little imagination. Many Arts and Crafts fairs are held throughout the summer in outdoor venues where local artists and crafters show their wares.
Here is a recent creation of mine, made from antique buttons that were found in a store in Westbranch, 18 miles East of Houghton Lake.
I love to spend my free time creating artistic things such as jewelry, fabric designs and painting pictures of local objects.
Art is needed in this chaotic world. It gives our minds freedom of expression and is an extension of each unique cultural's experience.
One of my favourite ways of learning about the local people whenever I travel, is through their unique artistic expressions. I hope you too, search for the 'Art' in your travels.
