Maybe because Houghton Lake Heights has almost 9 months of winter full of snow, ice, grey clouds, wind and just plain depressing days, that when Spring finally arrives, Houghton Lakers can't wait to fill their yards and line the streets with flowers! Flowers, and more flowers can be seen at the first hint of warm weather! In fact, every year the Houghton Lake Business Association sponsors a contest for all business to see who has the most beautifully landscaped and flowered grounds in the area! People all around the lake, which is 35 miles around, love their yards and flowers!
Since I was a young girl coming to Houghton Lake on the weekends with my family, I have always enjoyed just 'taking a drive around the lake to look at the houses and their yards full of flowers.

Rododendrums Don't Grow only on Rhodes!

Many of the houses in the Houghton Lake Heights area were built as summer cottages between 1930 and 1950. Today, many of these small, quaint wooden houses have been restored and sit along the Western shores of the Lake surrounded by their owner's floral decorations. It is a long standing tradition of the native Houghton Lakers to plant many bright flowers in the front yards. So, do take a ride around the neighborhood when you are here to admire the old charm of these 'neat' little gardens straight from the pages of history.
