Cosmo's Cucina: Fresh is the key word
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This little gem of a restaurant is off the beaten track in Kalamazoo's "student ghetto" area. Situated on the corner of Vine and Lovell Streets, there is an Irish pub downstairs that serves burgers and brews. Cosmos is upstairs (no wheelchair access). Their menu is full of freshly prepared, healthy meals. Healthy here doesn't mean boring - they offer a constantly changing menu and daily specials. Select your favorite wine or beer to accompany your meal.

Servers are friendly and timely. The old building has a lot of ambiance and there is artwork for sale on the walls. The views of the nieghborhood are charming.

Cost is quite reasonable. I don't know of another Kalamazoo restaurant with this type of menu.

As the menu changes, it's hard to say a favorite. I usually go for seafood or salads. I have never had a bad meal, or even a mediocre, meal here.

Colonial Kitchen: Where The Locals Eat....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is the place for Breakfast in Kalamazoo. It's been here forever and is pretty much the same as it was 30 years ago. The food is simple American fare,(eggs, meat, bread, potatos) prepared quickly and served with a smile. The decor is nothing special, but the food is good and I'm amazed at how fast your order comes up. On any week-day morning you'll find a mixture of Building contractors,University professors, and local bussiness people on there way to work. We stop for breakfast and the latest news on local sports teams. You'll get a whole pot of coffee on your table and if you need more just prop up the lid and she'll bring you another. Take your time.
Come early, especialy on weekends. No reservations needed, but if you show up after 9:00 on the week-ends you'll be waiting in line.

I always get the same thing. The Potato Omlett is a six egg omlett with potatos and sour cream, and a short stack of pancakes.

BD's Mongolian Barbecue: It's Mongo Man! Delish Mongolian BBQ
  • Tip Rating:

  • This is a new restaurant that is part of a national chain. The draw to this peppy, lively casual dining establishment is that you get to pick what you want! You pick the vegetables, meats, sauces and put them all together for the cooks to grill up for you while you watch.

I had the ginger sauce over a combination of chicken, beef, baby corn, mushrooms, noodles, tomatoes and water chestnuts. There is so much to experiment with, you can have a completely different meal each time you go.

Food Dance Cafe: Fresh Breakfast Worth Dancing About
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Food Dance Cafe is a beautiful little breakfast spot where you can find most of Kalamazoo on weekend mornings. The orance juice is fresh and served in big carafes. The walls are hand-painted with beautiful vegetables, cornfields and other naturescapes.

I love the basic breakfast there: two eggs, breakfast potatoes and homemade sourdough bread. My brother gets an omelet called the Do-Si-Do as in the square-dancing step! The food is reasonably priced but for some reason the drinks (juices, coffees, teas) are expensive!

Big Apple Bagel Shop: Best Big Apple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A bagel is a bagel , right ? As with most of my favorite things the difference is in the presentation. I'm in here about 4 days a week on my way to work, and I drive out of my way and past another bagel shop and a couple of coffee shops to get there. The owners of this place (Jason and Rachel) have turned a ordinary Bagel shop into a friendly pit-stop on my long drive to work. Bagel's are fresh, coffee is excelent and no matter who waits on me I get a "good morning Ernie" and a smile along with my cup of coffee and bagel. What more could a grumpy old guy ask for early in the morning ?

Cranberry Walnut Bagel, November's flavor of the month.

Hunan Gardens: In the mood for Chinese food?
  • Satisfaction:
  • All the regular Chinese dishes you would expect, but I think this is the best Chinese restaurant in the Kalamazoo area. Their lunch specials are the best, including soup, meal with fried rice, and your choice of egg roll or crab meat rangoons (I prefer the rangoons - yum!). The staff is usually very attentive and always friendly and helpful. The price is just right too!

My favorite dish is always the chicken with broccoli. The brown sauce is great and I can't find that type of sauce anywhere else. Tasty!

Shawarma King: Arabic food in a quiet atmosphere
  • Satisfaction:
  • We go often for several reasons. Debbie is Vegetarian, and this is one place with a good selection of things she likes. It is rarely busy, so you get served quickly. The food is good and the portions are generous. It seems the typical diner likes the big chain restaurants, and so they are overpriced and crowded.
At the end of 2005, this place changed hands, new name. It is still pretty good, and now a buffet was added.

Shawarma, for me. The meat is generous and the serving is LARGE,. You won't leave here hungry. Debbie likes the spinach and the eggplant dishes. Now that they have the buffet, it is always the choice.
