Sweetwater's Donut Mill: Need some donuts?
  • Satisfaction:
  • vree
  • By vree on May 22, 2006

  • Kind of homey inside. The donuts are the best in the area, bar none.

    From their website:
A Kalamazoo tradition since 1983, Sweetwater's Donut Mill serves fresh, unique varieties from it's three locations, two in the 'Zoo and one in Battle Creek. All are open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, and feature a smoke free environment. We are renowned for our super-sized cinnamon rolls, fruit fritters, long johns and assorted donuts like New York cheesecake, apple crumb, German chocolate, and peanut butter cup. We call them gourmet, but we'll let you be the judge.

Both Kalamazoo locations feature drive-thru windows, also open 24 hours, and some of the smoothest coffee you'll ever taste. We welcome large orders and offer a call-ahead service so your donuts are ready upon arrival. Orders called ahead of 5 dozen or more receive a 10% discount, and we can even setup a corporate account for your organizaton to charge donuts and receive one monthly statement. Schools, churches and offices are examples of those who have found this valuable.

Boston creme donuts and sometimes the chocolate cake, but any kind will do.

Theo and Stacy's: Best greasy spoon in town

  • In the mood for greasy food and generally friendly service? Fast, cheap and friendly, Theo and Stacy's is a favorite of my friends and mine. Breakfast is the best, but their lunch, dinner and desserts are great too! Want a gyro? This is the only place in town to get one.

There are three locations and I prefer them in this order: Westnedge Ave., downtown, Portage Rd.

breakfast: french toast - it comes without powdered sugar, just the way my dad used to make it.
lunch/dinner: chicken strips with fries or sometimes the chicken gyro. oh so good!

Funky little place on the second floor, with enclosed balcony over the sidewalk. Very low key and fun staff. I like to go after midnight as I work evenings. They are open all night on weekends. No smoking, though there is a coffee shop downstairs with a considerable cloud inside, if you can stand that. In a largely student neighborhood.

I've had a number of breakfast food things, and enjoy their experimental and healthy menu. I much prefer local places to the many chain restaurants at the edge of the city.

This restaurant is in downtown Kalamazoo, with a regal feel and delicious food. The atmosphere is classy, but not stuffy, and the menu reflects the same sophisticated yet accessible sensibility.

I highly recommend the tomato soup as a starter, and the sea bass as your meal. The soup is served with freshly baked bread inside ... it literally melts in your mouth. Plus, there are over 100 wines available by the glass. And finish off your meal with the creme brule - it's served with fresh berries and cream.

Located downtown in a building destroyed by a tornado 25 years ago. Well, it is pretty nice now! The food is better than average, and I don't have any favorites, but I do enjoy the atmosphere and the beer is really good.

Really the local made beer is the best thing. Good variety of food items, and all are good.

Pronounced Rixies, this relaxed family dining restaurant provides seating for 181. Treat yourself to their homebaked cinnamon rolls or other delicious bakery items all made from scratch in their own kitchen. Most of their menu items are also fixed from scratch.

This is one of the most if not "the" most popular casual eating places in Kalamazoo!

The food is delicious at this brightly colored and stylish restaurant. The ambiance is very sophisticated and upbeat. The menu has plenty of pasta, pizza, fish, steak and chicken dishes to satisfy any customer.

I had the swordfish which was prepared with artichoke, a light white wine sauce and garlic. It was very tasty. The halibut was reported to be good by another member of my dining party. And for the veggies, the pasta with marinara sauce was delicious despite sounding too plain.

  • Cow Pie, a Huge portion for $3.95 - Kalamazoo
Cow Pie, a Huge portion for
    $3.95
    by KalamazooJohn, 1 more photos
There are two Big Moe's in Kalamazoo, and since the second one opened near my home, I've been there several times. An early gas station building, the dining area is the former office, so is small and dark, and the kitchen was once a service bay. Overall, a cute building, once was Art Deco, but that was years ago! Not much of a place to eat, so get it to go, and there is a store across the street to get beer to have with it.

I like the Cow Pie, probably named for being just plopped together. No cow in it, but a lot of fries topped with a lot of BBQ Pork and topped with melted cheese. A huge portion, for $3.95!!! For some reason, it is not on the menu, but popular, so just ask for it. In the picture, I put a bottle of beer next to it for size comparison, as they don't sell beer. Open from 11 AM to 9 PM daily.
