VIEW OF SOUTH MANITOU ISLAND AND A LIGHTHOUSE

From Leland you can take a ferry to the Manitou Islands which are a part of the Sleeping Bear National Shoreline.

You can take a day trip to South Manitou Island and enjoy nature as well as view a shipwreck and visit a lighthouse.

North Manitou Island can be visited as well, but the ferry only visits once a day, so if you go you had better plan on camping!

SCENIC DRIVE and HIKE

Enjoy the scenic drive between Leland and Glen Arbor. Stop and hike to Pyramid Point which is only a mile or two north of Glen Arbor.

The hike to the sandy bluff is .6 miles and takes you through a prarie and woods. Watch for deer and other wildlife on the way.

From the top of the bluff, about 250 feet up from Lake Michigan, you can watch the schools of fish swim by, enjoy a snack, or watch the sunset.

The link takes you to the map and some pictures.

Fishtown, the heart of Leland

Fishtown from the bridge

Leland is on Lake Michigan, and used to have a pretty good sized commercial fishery. While some fishing vessels still berth in Leland, Fishtown is now primarily for other commercial ventures.

Bluebird Restaurant & Bar: Casual and Fine Dining

LELAND STREET SCENE

The meal I ate here was very nice. Of course I had Lake Michigan Whitefish.

You can enjoy a casual meal in the bar area, which is family friendly, where they serve fish, sandwiches, hamburgers, pizza, steak, etc.

The Dining Room has a more extensive menu that includes Michigan fish, lobster, pasta, etc.

Expect to pay around $20/entree in the dining room, and about $7/entree in the bar.

Favorite Dish: If you are visiting Michigan, I think you should try some lake fish.

The Blue Bird offers great traditional fare, in a bit more formal setting than The Cove. The Blue Bird also has riverside views from its location along the river above the dam.

The Early Bird is the place to go in Leland for breakfast. It is adjacent to the Blue Bird.

Favorite Dish: Take your pick.

The Cove: A good mix

More than just seafood. The Cove has a great wine selection, and they do a fine job even without electricity!

One of the neat things about eating here is that they have seating on 2 levels indoors, and 3 levels out on the deck (the crow's nest is the most intimate outdoors.) The restaurant is situated in "Upper" Fishtown, adjacent to the dam, and the outdoor seating offers a great view of the setting sun and the Manitou Passage.

Parking in Leland is readily available streetside. There is no parking on-site at The Cove.

Favorite Dish: Macadamia encrusted walleye was great, but they also make a great soft shell crab appetizer.

Small and quiet...perfect for those who enjoy dining in the right atmosphere. Prices reasonable for such a fine meal.

Favorite Dish: Exquisite food made from scratch. Be careful in the summer; reservations are generally a must. Menu changes daily....never had a bad meal.

Tourist Traps

Anything on main street and...
hugh_jass profile photo

Anything on main street and Fishtown except for Carson's Fish, who have fresh everything. Most of the retail trade in Leland is of the rubber dog turd variety-nothing one cannot get anywhere else. Save your money for dining out and perhaps the large bill you will aquire from the local bed and breakfasts' or hotels.
