Favorite thing: This is a very popular place for ice fishing! In a typical winter, the ice on Munising Bay achieves a thickness of between 3 and 5 feet, and by mid-February you might see 250 ice shanties scattered from shore to shore.
This is a wonderful place for outdoors adventures. Don't miss a visit to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. You may wish to stop in at the Hiawatha National Forest/Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore visitor information center, which is located at SR 28 and CR-H58. Winter brings snowmobiling, with Munising advertising itself as the Snowmobile Capital of the Mid-west.
Fondest memory: Seeing a mother black bear and four cubs clustered close around her, all faces looking at us as we hiked a road in Grand Island. Taking our dinghy on a slow trip late afternoon to view the magnificent colors of the rocks along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. See my travelogue, Visiting Pictured Rocks by dinghy for photos of this trip.
The coastline is made of sandstone, and one section of the trail is along the dunes. These are steep walls where the rock has been reduced to sand.
Fondest memory: We enjoyed a day playing on the dunes. Leaving our packs at the top, we run as fast as we can and jump as far as we can, landing in the soft sand, and rolling down to the water's edge. then it takes about an hour to climb back up. Leave your shoes and socks behind, as they are a hinderance on the way up. After a week in Hiking boots your feet will enjoy their outing.
After hiking under the canopy of trees it is refreshing to be out in the open, and this comes at a good spot on the trail. We planned for a beach party, and brought wild clothes (see nightlife). I even went swimming!! Lake Superior is always cold being the largest, deepest, and furthest north of the great lakes, but after several days on the trail a chance to clean off and refresh is always too great a temptation for me.
Fondest memory: The Beach Party!! Enjoying a day relaxing in the sun, drinking some wine, and our special party foods that we lugged this far. It was all worth the effort.
After a day on the trail it is good to make camp, build your fire, take your boots off, relax and watch the sun go down. As with sunrises, you can see them anywhere, but it is really special when you are outside.
Fondest memory: The end of the day, when it is time to relax and reflect is always special.
I really enjoy hiking. It is the right pace for life, and Pictured Rocks is wonderful. No hard climbs just an easy forty mile hike, and no reason to hurry. Take a week, who cares?
Fondest memory: Seeing the beautiful rock formations.
Yes, there are sunrises all over the world, but it still stops me to see the glory of the sun asserting itself in different locals. It takes on special meaning when you are sleeping under a blanket of stars.
Fondest memory: Occationally using my camera to good advantage. In Pictured Rocks you will get plenty of opportunity.
