    Wagner Falls State Scenic Site

    by Stephen-KarenConn Updated Mar 7, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This small 23 acre site, managed by the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources, is undeveloped except for a small parking area, and a trail/boardwalk to the falls. Set among towering virgin pines and hemlock, The falls are a very picturesque 20 ft. cascade. The easy half mile hike to the falls was a great place for stretching our legs and taking a few photographs.

    Miners Falls

    by Stephen-KarenConn Updated Mar 7, 2004

Plunging 60 feet over the rugged Pictured Rocks sandstone escarpment, this impressive waterfall can be reached only by foot. We enjoyed the easy 1.2 mile (round trip) hike through a stately mature northwoods forest. Interpretive signposts along the way enhanced our experience.

    Pictured Rocks Cruise Boats

    by phred1910 Written Feb 25, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A 2.5 hour trip into Lake Superior along Grand Island, and then off towards the beautiful Pictured Rocks. No trip to Munising is complete without this. Tickets are about $30. The boats run from May through the fall color season. Ask for my friend Captain Dave Sliter, we went to high school and college together. Dave lives in Vienna, Austria in the winter and comes home in the summer to be a Captain.

    Munising Falls in the Winter

Perhaps more beautiful than the falls in the summer, especially after a fresh snowfall. Strap on your snowshoes or gaiters and head back along the same trail. You might find ice climbers scaling the ice column.

Head out towards Sand Point and stop on the way at Munising Falls. A short hike from the visitor's center along the babbling brook finds you at the breathtaking plunge of Munising Falls. Unfortunately, access has been severly limited due to erosion caused rock falls. When I was younger, we used to climb behind the falls and also on top of them. I still sneak around if it isn't very busy, but you need to be careful for the rocks and the park po-po.

    The Lighthouse

by kaloz Written Feb 25, 2003

Lighthouses are very popular attractions in the United States. There is something about them that captured the imagination. Maybe it is the shape. This lighthouse used to guide ships in because this area used to be logged, and there are interpretive signs about the logging days. To get an idea of scale notice the girl standing at the base of the tower.

Natural bridges are always fascinating. You just have to stop and look. This was taken on a misty day. If you go hiking for any length of time you will experience many types of weather, so be prepared.

    An imposing wall

We parked our car in Grand Marais, and hitched a ride to Munising and the trailhead. You can go in either direction, and rides are available. This imposing wall rises out of the blue waters, but the trees near the edge appear nervous, as if at any moment . . . Aaaaiiiiiyyyyy . . . Splash!!

Both the falls & surrounding area are very pretty. Well worth the stop. When you get to the falls there is an option to go up steps to the right or follow the base to the left. Go to both for sure.

Watch the Tourists Load into Boats

I didn't have time to take the Picture Rocks or Grand Island Tours, so I ate my white fish sandwich and watch the long line of tourists load into the boats and depart across the bay.

On this January day, it wasn't absolutely necessary to have snowshoes in order to walk up the short trail to see Munising Falls - but you'll be glad to have them if you go anywhere off the trail.

This picture should give you some idea why they call this walk "pictured rocks". The whole trail is scenic, but the rocks are fantastic.
