  • Anything goes. But duffle bags work better for camping.

During the summer pack for all types of weather when you are up in the Upper Pennisula. The weather changes in the drop of a hat. As we say in Michigan, don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. It could be could and rainy one minute, the next it could be warm and sunny. You never know.

  • Pack layers of clothing. You never know what the weather will be. It may be roasting during the day and freezing at night or cool in morning and evening and hot during the day. You never know! Layers are a must. The weather changes every five minutes here.

  • Typical suitcases and travel bags.

Warm coat in the winter, as it can get very cold. Also, it is usually windy in the winter, this can create a wind chill which requires gloves and a hat or hood to protect your skin, if you are going to be out more than just getting out of your car, and going in to a store. And a pair of shoes that can handle the slush and snow on the sidewalks and in the parking lots. On the other hand it can get hot in the summer. Bring typical summer gear. Depending on your sensitivity to the sun, bring a mild sunscreen, as I don't get burned up here, like I do in Florida. We do have four seasons here, so plan according to that.

Nothing special, as everything you need is readily available, although if spending a lot of time in remote areas such as in the Upper Peninsula, you should have extra supplies.

No problems, many stores especially in the large cities. If you are traveling outstate areas, you may want to carry extras.

Watch out for blackflies in the Upper Peninsula. Also bears, if you are in a remote area. Just don't leave garbage with food outside nearby your place of staying. They won't break in to your room, but it can be scary hearing them rummaging about just outside. We do have mosquitos in the summer. I use Repel, it works for me.

Depending on what you like to do, Michigan has a season and a sport for everbody. From dune buggying, to golf, water and snow skiing, beach activities, boating sailing, it's all here.

If you are travelling in the winter (anytime really between October and April), pack WARM clothing that you can layer. A hat, gloves, heavy coat, sweater, pants, tights, heavy socks, rugged shoes and a scarf are essential. At left is me in my winter clothing, taken the day I visited Lake Michigan in late March. It was SO COLD that day.

  • Very important...there are many lake affect conditions here. Last week we had 12 inches of snow, today it is raining. Bring everything. The closer you are to the lake the colder it is and even in the dead of summer the temp can drop dramatically. The winters are usually terrible for driving conditions and the spring poses serious pot holes that have been known to cause hundreds of dollars of damge to cars. Also...rent a car! This is the land of the automobile for crying out loud! There is little to no public transportation outside of Lansing and Detroit's inner city areas!

  • Though you can certainly buy it here, I recommend bringing mosquito repellant. Michigan in the summer is notorious for swarms of hungry mosquitos and biting flies-- and the further north in the state you go, the more you'll find.

  • If you come to Michigan between February and October you should bring both warm and cool clothes as the temperature changes often and dramatically. Make sure to have mosquito protection from June until September.

  • Make sure you are prepared for any type of weather, but keep it light because you may have to carry it whereever you go. Always keep a sweater handy in the summer(evenings can get cool, especially by the lakes),and be ready to get wet, there are great swimming lakes almost everywhere.

Be ready for misquito bites or bee stings (they do happen) especially if you are allergic. After that just the basics are good, just what you need.

Know what you need and plan ahead, sometimes it's a long way to the store to get what you need.
