Warren Dune State Park Shoes

by Fullmoonfever

When visiting the park remember to bring shoe that are comfortable for walking in sand. This is important for two reasons; 1) In summer the sand gets extremely hot and will burn your feet. If you are going to walk here, you will be walking in sand!2) Always bring or wear athletic shoes to the park. These are the only type of shoes that are comfortable walking on the dunes for any lenght of time. Yes, by all means bring a camera. Theres some great photos to be taken here. But please take care not to let sand get into you equipment! At the end of the day, it seems that sand has a way to get everywhere.

Get some maps.I could not locate a good, general guide book for the state although there are plenty of guide books for regions like Upper Peninsula, Western Michigan, Detroit Area Guide (all readily available in stores like Barnes and Nobles). So we just packed the Rand McNally maps for Michigan and picked up local brochures at the visitor centers as we went along to supplement the information.

General tip for visitors to the US, most of which access the US by airplane. For security reasons, any port of entry would require passengers to retrieve the incoming luggage and have it checked in again for further destinations. To expedite procedures and receive the least hassle I recommend to bring along minimum bulk and pieces of luggage. I believe the general retail price levels are to be considered convenient, at least for Europeans, and my habit when visiting the US is to bring the least and locally buy what I need. Michigan summers are hot and humid, therefore adequate light clothes and shoes are sufficient. On the other hand, one doesn't want to be unprepared in winter when cold can be extreme and 5 F (-15 C) temperatures are common.

Anything goes. But duffle bags work better for camping. During the summer pack for all types of weather when you are up in the Upper Pennisula. The weather changes in the drop of a hat. As we say in Michigan, don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. It could be could and rainy one minute, the next it could be warm and sunny. You never know.

Make sure you are prepared for any type of weather, but keep it light because you may have to carry it whereever you go. Always keep a sweater handy in the summer(evenings can get cool, especially by the lakes),and be ready to get wet, there are great swimming lakes almost everywhere. Be ready for misquito bites or bee stings (they do happen) especially if you are allergic. After that just the basics are good, just what you need. Know what you need and plan ahead, sometimes it's a long way to the store to get what you need.

Pack layers of clothing. You never know what the weather will be. It may be roasting during the day and freezing at night or cool in morning and evening and hot during the day. You never know! Layers are a must. The weather changes every five minutes here. Camping

Though you can certainly buy it here, I recommend bringing mosquito repellant. Michigan in the summer is notorious for swarms of hungry mosquitos and biting flies-- and the further north in the state you go, the more you'll find.

If you are travelling in the winter (anytime really between October and April), pack WARM clothing that you can layer. A hat, gloves, heavy coat, sweater, pants, tights, heavy socks, rugged shoes and a scarf are essential. At left is me in my winter clothing, taken the day I visited Lake Michigan in late March. It was SO COLD that day.

Typical suitcases and travel bags. Warm coat in the winter, as it can get very cold. Also, it is usually windy in the winter, this can create a wind chill which requires gloves and a hat or hood to protect your skin, if you are going to be out more than just getting out of your car, and going in to a store. And a pair of shoes that can handle the slush and snow on the sidewalks and in the parking lots. On the other hand it can get hot in the summer. Bring typical summer gear. Depending on your sensitivity to the sun, bring a mild sunscreen, as I don't get burned up here, like I do in Florida. We do have four seasons here, so plan according to that. Nothing special, as everything you need is readily available, although if spending a lot of time in remote areas such as in the Upper Peninsula, you should have extra supplies. No problems, many stores especially in the large cities. If you...

Very important...there are many lake affect conditions here. Last week we had 12 inches of snow, today it is raining. Bring everything. The closer you are to the lake the colder it is and even in the dead of summer the temp can drop dramatically. The winters are usually terrible for driving conditions and the spring poses serious pot holes that have been known to cause hundreds of dollars of damge to cars. Also...rent a car! This is the land of the automobile for crying out loud! There is little to no public transportation outside of Lansing and Detroit's inner city areas!
