Things to Do

Port Huron Light (Fort Gratiot)

Port Huron Light (Fort Gratiot), Port Huron

Toughluck Says:  The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is located at the mouth of the St. Clair River. Since it is located on a military reservation (Fort Gratiot), you'll have to go to the public park just north of the facility. There is plenty of parking and a stretch of beach on Lake Huron. Here,...

Bluewater Bridge

Bluewater Bridge, Port Huron

Toughluck Says:  'Bluewater' is freshwater, whereas 'Greenwater' are the oceans. Of course 'Whitewater' is the froth created by rivers tumbling over rocks. Well that's one concept. .The Bluewater Bridge(s) spans the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan, USA and Sarnia,...

Huron Lightship

Huron Lightship, Port Huron

Toughluck Says:  In the days before GPS and radio fixes, lights on the lake were the only way to know when you were nearing a dangerous reef or the entrance to a port. When the spot was too deep to build an island or a structure, lightships were anchored on the site. Crews would live on...

Restaurants

Thomas Edison Inn: Not Your Average Restaurant

Thomas Edison Inn: Not Your Average Restaurant, Port Huron

J.Dorland Says:  This is an older, well kept, higher end restaurant in the Thomas Edison motel located under the Bluewater Bridge. This is not a cheap place to eat but the food makes it well worth the extra money. The service is excellent and the atmosphere great. Filet mignon or the surf...

Cheap Charlies: Best Pizza

Cheap Charlies: Best Pizza, Port Huron

J.Dorland Says:  Cheap Charlie's is located at 3990 24th Ave on the north end of Port Huron ( the area is called Fort Gratiot) They have the best pizza I've ever had. The place is busy, clean and the staff is friendly and fast. The pizza is great and they server other foods as well. My...

Coffee and books

Coffee and books, Port Huron

Toughluck Says:  It's like visiting a library and have meal service at your seat. Pleasant setting. Two floors, lots of books, posters, and knik-knaks. Fancy sandwiches and drinks. It's not the usual type of place I eat in.

River Crab: River Crab

River Crab: River Crab, Port Huron

greencard Says:  The restaurant is very nice. It feels fancy enough to have a serious business dinner, but it also has a relaxed atmosphere so you feel comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt. I love anything seafood. The salmon is really good.

Nightlife

JD's Key Club, Huron Athletic Club: There is SOME nightlife

JD's Key Club, Huron Athletic Club: There is SOME nightlife, Port Huron

brmuda_mohawk Says:  There actually IS a small amount of nightlife in little old Port Huron, occasionally. But, if you're from somewhere large and marginally trendy, you'll probably hate it.On Thursday night, JD's KeyClub has it's 18 and over night, where you'll find LOTS of guys who theink...

Heh, nightlife doesn't really..., Port Huron

greencard Says:  Heh, nightlife doesn't really enter the picture here. After all, this is a small midwestern town. The closest thing to night life there is here is the Wednesday-night band at the Thomas Eddison Inn bar. It's so cheesey it's funny.

Transportation

To the Lighthouse

To the Lighthouse, Port Huron

Toughluck Says:  Fort Gratiot Lighthosue is viewed from the south end of Lighthouse Park. Take 10th Ave or Edison Parkway (riverfront) north to Garfield Ave. East on Garfield to Lighthouse park. You'll have to walk out onto the beach as the trees block the view from the parking area. It's...

You can fly into Detroit and...

You can fly into Detroit and..., Port Huron

greencard Says:  You can fly into Detroit and then rent a car at the airport for an hour-and-a-half drive down I-94. Since you will have to drive through Detroit, make sure your flight doesn't get you there right before rush hour. Alternately, you can fly into Sarnia, ON (in Canada) and make...

Shopping

Downtown is all offices, there is nothing unique: Port Huron, Land of Homogeny

If you want to shop in Port Huron, all the city's shopping is conviently located just north of PH, downtown is all offices and a few souveniers (like visiting PH is memorable, unless you-an attractive young woman-take my general tip to heart). I keep thinking the best item a gift shop here could sell is a shirt that says "thank god i left Port Huron before it drained the life from my very bones", but, alas, none do.

The shopping is decent but unspectacular north of the city. The past city administration was forbidden to own property in the city itself, so they did their finest to attract growth just outside the city limits, where, as luck would have it, they DID own property. So, you'll find all the standard things you find in and around a mall. Don't look for anything unique though...Port Huron is all about being like everyone else.

You'll see a wide variety of ships passing. If you're lucky, a 1000 footer will go by as you're enjoying the view. There is a constant parade day and night along the riverfront.

The Port Huron Reality

The Port Huron Reality, Port Huron

brmuda_mohawk Says:  Port Huron, an unusual place. It's a city of 35,000, in anl area of roughly 200,000 in a 15 mile radius. It's a small town that wants to desperately believe it isn't.The city government views PH as a "resort locale", which it most certainly isn't. This is based on the...
