Trying to See the Distant Shore

As we rode past the main beach we came to the end of the road. From here we thought we could get a couple of shots of the entire beach area. While Sue took those pictures I concentrated more on the two couples I saw here which I think give a good impression of what many people fail to do in this active world of ours. Just sit back or lay back and take time to relax. These two couples, for the moment at least, have mastered that skill.

    Venetian Festival at St Joseph

Mid-July means it's the Venetian Festival in St Joseph, MI. They have a lot of carnival rides, food, music, etc and it's so fun to come to this event. One year, they had a soda company that would sell you their big mug and you could get all the refills you wanted! Hope they come back again when we go this year... They had a big band play some music and you'd see senior citizens all dressed up and swinging to the groove... They also had local artists decorate toy cars that they then displayed around the downtown area of St Joseph.. kind of like the cows in Chicago, IL & the pigs in Seattle, IL. Cool. Best part is, the lake is right there ready for a dip if you get too hot during the day.

    Curious Kid Museum

A great kids museum in the heart of downtown. Activities for kids from toddler to about 10 or 11. My son loves to play doctor on the ambulance the best, but also like all the science stuff and the face painting. The toddler section is great with plenty of climbing toys and water play in an area that the big kids aren't allowed in, all with a barnyard theme. The special programs they have are lots of fun, too.

EASTER EGG HUNT - Held each year the day before Easter on the bluff.
The egg hunt put on by the city is fun for all ages. They divide the kids up by age and they hunt eggs on the bluff. The egg hunt is started by a loud blast from the fire truck, which carries the Easter Bunny. After the egg hunt (which last about 30 seconds!) the Easter Bunny is around take pictures with the kids.

Beaches - St. Joe has three main beaches, Silver Beach, Lion's Beach and Tiscornia Park. Each beach has its own personality and different things that stand out about them.
Silver Beach has two great playgrounds, a beautiful beach, and a boardwalk dotted with swings. It is also the beach with access to the south pier, a great place to stoll and see the sunset or go fishing. It also is along the St. Joseph River and the entrance to the marinas.
Lion's Beach doesn't have lifeguards and isn't for swimming. It is fun to collect shells or beach glass, play on the playground, or just park on the overlook. Best view of the lake.
Tiscornia has access to the north pier, which has the lighthouse on it. Best place to take lighthouse pictures or to fish undisturbed.

HALLOWEEN PARADE - The Saturday before Halloween, the city throws the kids a party. There is trick-or-treating, a costume parade, and hayrides in the downtown area.
Tons of fun for the kids! They trick-or-treat to all the stores, which pass out candy. The parade also includes costume judging. The hayride goes around town and is really done with a horse, not a tractor!
