The only way into or out of Traverse City is on a two-lane highway, with oncoming traffic. Plenty of it. In fact, Traverse City is the second largest population center in the USA that still has no 4-lane access to the national highway grid (San Angelo TX is the largest).
If you plan to arrive or leave Traverse City on a weekend in the summer, traffic will be bumper-to-bumper for at least 20 miles on all roads in and out of town. Don't even think about passing. (Bad enough at other times.)
Stay away from downtown in a car along the bay. The traffic is horrible, especially during Cherry Festival with everyone walking around.
Good advice: Use a bike to get around. They are faster than cars in traffic and safer too.
You will love this area and the way of life. Prepare to return home and begin making plans to move here.
