This park is picturesque at any time of the year, but in winter they clear the pond of snow and have open skating there. They put up boards for hockey as well. Plenty of parking, well-lit in the evenings, and a warming house on premises. It's been years since I've skated there, but it's still a family favorite.
The picture is of the 'iconic' Noonan's Duck House. A local landmark.

This is the Place to go in Alexandria, MN. The food is wonderful. It has the ambiance of a local seaside restaurant, while it is by a small lake.
They really go all out on decorations here, with the palm trees, and the fish tank. It's SO great!

The ACTUAL original Alexandria railroad depot, the Depot Express offers a great location AND a great bite to eat! Located at the end of Alexandria's main drag (Broadway), the Depot has a beautiful view of Lake Henry. Also directly across the street is another Alexandria landmark, Big Ole, an homage to the Viking explorers that visited this area in the 1300's, predating Christopher Columbus! If you're sports-minded, the Central Lakes Trail is a paved hiking, biking, etc. trail that runs along the lake, right behind the building. They offer a diverse menu AND a full bar as well as a patio that's ideal for enjoying summer evenings by the lake. Their specialties include their delicious popovers and brick-oven pizzas. I recommend a stop at the Depot Express, a perfect choice for a light lunch, a nice dinner, or just a drink!
Favorite Dish: I LOVE the Brick-oven pizza, I advise you to try the Chicken pizza with White sauce and mushrooms...for a nice twist, throw some green olives on there, and wash it down with a Newcastle Brown Ale!

Bar and Grill type restaurant. Dining is separate from the bar. Local hangout for pool players and dart tournaments. Definitely a "Cheers" style ambience. OK, so my sister in law runs it. But that is what makes it so homey. Great family place. Always kids around.
Favorite Dish: The Prime Rib is famous locally. The Friday all you can eat fish and shrimp is really good. The fish is out of this world. All the soups are homemade.

Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale has a GREAT location as well as a fun and friendly atmosphere! A comfortable and cozy space, often there are live musicians performing. The wine list is extensive and the variety of imported and domestic beers is impressive! The intimacy of Sixth Avenue is ideal for an after-dinner drink with your sweetie OR a place to meet the girls after work! There is also a fantastic chef who prepares delicious appetizers and fondues, perfect with a bottle of your favorite! Location is excellent, just half a block off Broadway, close to many antique shops, variety stores and other locally-owned businesses. Stop into Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale any day OR evening for your favorite, or maybe a taste of something new!

Luggage and bags: Nothing special here
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring a jacket. In the summer we have downright cold days and in the winter it can be just plain hot. So make sure you have a middle of the road outfit, or be prepared to buy one. You just can't rely on the weather forecast.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sunscreen (year round) and mosquito spray. Lotion is nice too.
Photo Equipment: Gotta take pictures in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Besides we have Big Ole. A 20' Viking that guards our town.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring a swim suit. Even in winter. This is a small town, but most the hotels have pools or hot tubs.
Miscellaneous: Just remember, it may be 40 below today--but it will be 50 above tomorrow.

This is Viking Country. Period. Plain and simple. Like it or not, these folk are Vikings fans with their dying breaths. They will complain about the bad seasons and boast about the good. You won't get pummeled for cheering on another team, but watch out for those icy glares. Not being a born Minnesotan, I am lucky enough not to be afflicted with this disease. But, it does give a woman a chance to wear purple and not seem goshe.
Equipment: Any bar, sports bar, bar and grill, hotel lobby or any place more than 3 locals gather together on game day.

Favorite thing: They call it the Alexandria Lakes Area. A popular activity around here is 'cruising the lakes'. We have a chain of lakes that runs all around town, as well as many other lakes and wetlands throughout the entire county. An evening drive can show you dozens of different lakes without travelling very many miles. I think watching the water is soo calming, so I can sit in my garden swing and look at the lake for hours. Slow down, look around, relax and enjoy your surroundings.
