This was the big walleye of the day, about a 4 pounder. The are the best eating fish you can catch and the most famous fish in Minnesota lakes. You can tell if you have one when your bobber slides slowly down into the water, then SET THE HOOK!
These slimy fish are bottom dwellers who have skin instead of scales and are ugly as hell. They are a good fight, and are usually pretty large, but when you see the golden brown color through the hole you know you got one of the bastards on the line.
You can see how the shacks were spread out across the lake in the distance. We were driving small trucks on the ice already you can see the tracks in the snow. The ice was only six inches thick on top of 25 feet of water.
These little ice fishing shacks were scattered all over the lake of the woods. Border View Lodge must of had hundreds. You could easily move from one heated shack to another if the fish were not biting.
We came home with our limits, not bad for a long day of fishing. Believe me, these were some of the best fish I've ever ate. mmmmm good.
These are a couple of holes we used for fishing through. You can see the ice is only 6 to 8 inches thick.
This is the group of guys who slayed the fish with me on a cold week near the border of Canada in northern Minnesota.
