Take some time to skip stones
Notice the perfect follow-through. I'm a good stone skipper, but Brighton Beach on Lake Superior is not the ideal location to show off skipping technique. I could get some stones to skip three or four times across a 30-40 foot path, but the waves and rocky shoreline proved to be a significant obstacle. On a calm river, I can probably skip a stone a good seven to eight times.
Calling all Finns
There are not an overabundance of ski jumping venues in the United States. Other than those built for use at the Olympics in Utah and Lake Placid--I doubt that there are many outside of Minnesota. A lot of nordic people settled the northern parts of Minnesota and any full-blooded Finn, Norske or Swede growing up in Duluth will surely have taken a try or two at this ski jump located in Chester Bowl.

Pretty much wherever you go in Duluth, if it's indoors, you aren't allowed to smoke. All restuarants are smoke free. Bowling alleys, too. For the most part, if you want to smoke indoors, you pretty much have to do it in your home or in a bar.
Get a Copy of the Ripsaw
The Ripsaw has gone to a monthly format recently and is thus no longer such a great source of current information as it was previously. It's still good, but it just doesn't give you the up to date information it used to.
Look for the Transistor or check out the Ripsaw website for current information on what's happening in Duluth.
- Arts and Culture
Duluth has a sizable Finnish-American community - no doubt they are key supporters of the Family Sauna downtown. Finnlanders thrive in cold climates, but there's nothing they like more than the bracing heat of a sauna.
Let's practice our pronunciation: it's SOW-N-UH. (not SAHN-UH)
If theres a fair going on...
If theres a fair going on while you're here, make sure to go, Minnesotans love food on a stick! There's corn on a stick, corn dogs, pork chops on a stick, ribs on a stick, cotton candy on a stick...no if they could only put Tom Thumb donuts on a stick...Tom Thumb donuts are the BEST!!! Have some!
...don't forget the beer garden!
Minnesotans favorite subject...
Minnesotans favorite subject is the weather...Everybody talks about the weather....If you feel like talking to anybody, mention the cold or the wind and we will most definitely have an opinion=)
Being part of Minnesota,...
Being part of Minnesota, Duluth has plenty of upper midwestern culture. Ever seen the movie Fargo? It isn't nearly as extreme (many of the words used are restricted to small towns or are obselete and only used in the older crowd), but it provides a rough yet exaggerated idea of the local culture. Minnesotans are well-mannered kind, reserved, perhaps a little dull on the outside(as in boring) people who will always help you. Fishing (and deer hunting) are very popular around here.
Make sure you give tips!...
Make sure you give tips! 12-15% is best that equals about what you would give if you double the tax of the bill. This is the only why some of these people make a living.
Ever watch Fargo, it's true they do talk like that.
Check out the wine and liquor stores around town for some local brews. I bought a beer that was actually brewed in nearby Ashland, Wisconsin that was pretty decent. The beer pictured here is a local beer from Duluth that is served at the Scenic Cafe (see my restaurant tip). It was a Lake Superior Brewery Mesabi Red. The brewery is located on W. Superior Street and you can try their beers on tap at the well-known Grandma's Saloon in Canal Park.
The Duluth girls are very nice
Duluth girlfriends are the best! I married mine. This is Becky on the shores of Lake Superior during the summer of 1989. She took me to see her hometown in August about 5 months after we started going out. Duluth can be cold in August--the first days that we were there it was drizzling and temps only in the 40s, but on this day when we returned from a camping trip up the coast, the weather was beautiful, as was Becky.

Look at these huge towers built for the sole purpose of storing grain until the grain ships arrive. I am told that this complex has the highest capacity for grain storage in the world.

Bob Dylan and Becky Z.
Duluth is the birthplace of Craic's personal hero, Bob Dylan and the hometown of my own personal hero, Becky Z. (my wife). Any city that can produce two such American heros must be ok.
