    St. Xavier Church

    little church in the woods

Favorite thing: St. Xavier was built by Jesuit missionaries for the local Ojibwe. The simplicity and honesty of the edifice is appealing. Unfortunately, it was locked when I passed through, but you might be luckier. The church is on SR 61, about half a mile north of Grand Marais.

    The happenin' part of town

You can check in, but you can never check out

Favorite thing: My sense is that if one were to be so foolish as to check in at the East Bay Hotel, one would not have cause to complain when they found his/her or theirselves in the midst of a Rod Serling Twilight Zone episode. Needless to say escape from said episode would be impossible and those unfortunate fools would spend eternity with Jack Klugman or Roddy McDowall.

    Grimmace and bear it

    just another day in paradise

Favorite thing: That's not a smile on Becky's face. It is a grimmace that was frozen in place. We rushed Becky back to our rooms and put her in the sauna. It was at least half an hour before she was able to thaw out and regain control of her facial muscles.

    iced in for the season

Favorite thing: Unless those boats have skates under the hull, I'm not sure when they get put into use. Probably some adventurous sailors put aground here one July 24th and came to find out the next morning that they were iced in until the following July 4th.

Enlarge the picture just to see how scary it is

Favorite thing: For the life of me, I couldn't tell you what goes on inside this place. To tell the truth I was too scared to venture inside. But I was brave enough to snap a photo of the only building that I have ever seen that has a giant fish puncturing its roof and wall. The type of fish you ask: you got me, I haven't a clue.

Favorite thing: Relax, No traffic, No deadlines, No mobs of tourists.Just Enjoy this quaint little piece of paradise!

Fondest memory: Sitting by the Lake Superior shore, watching the Sun rise, enjoying my morning coffee, listening to the waves crash, playing The wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald on my geetar...Of course this is at least 2 hours before the kids wake up.

    The harbor

Only another four months of winter

Favorite thing: According to my sources the harbor looks like this August through June. For a three week period in July the ice breaks and then Grand Marais is party central.
