Joynes, Ben Franklin: First stop for many local items & Souvenirs

by charlesracine Updated Nov 19, 2010
Joynes Ben Franklin old department, 5 & dime store

Try this as a first stop for many local items & Souvenirs. Prices are good and so is the selection in this small store. The Joynes family has been in Grand Marais for 100 years.

What to buy: They advertise and I would agree with their description; Family owned & operated department store in downtown Grand Marais since 1941. Joynes' Ben Franklin serves locals and visitors by offering needs and necessities such as housewares, toiletries, stationery supplies, greeting cards, pet supplies and toys. We also offer wants and desires such as maple products, Norwegian sweaters, wool and other fine clothing. Joynes' is open year-round Monday through Saturday.

What to pay: A bit less here

    Sivertsons: Art of the Northwoods

by yooperprof Written Aug 27, 2005
    art for art's sake

Sivertsons is the oldest and most successful commercial art gallery in Grand Marais. From what I read, it seems that members of the Sivertson family have been making and selling art here for more than 50 years. The gallery features both abstract and representational work in a variety of media, ranging from paintings and sculptures to glassware and pottery. It features work both by the Sivertson clan and by other local and regional artists.

The Beaver House: They lure you with their lures

by yooperprof Written Aug 27, 2005
it was soooooo big. . .

This seems like the best place in Grand Marais to get leeches, worms, and other fishing necessities. They also sell old glass bottles - a wide variety are on display in the front window.

You have to love a store that has an enormous flying fish sticking out of it.

The Beaver House on Wisconsin Street: Beaver House, best for fishing bait & stuff.

Beaver House, no not that kind of beaver

This place is certainly unusual outside but, an eye catcher. It is mostly a live bait and fishing supply shop.

8 Broadway Art Gallery: Local Art and Artists

by yooperprof Written Aug 28, 2005
    caught any good art lately?

The 8 Broadway Art Gallery is right next to the Beaver House. Appropriately, much of the featured work here highlights the local environment: fish, waterfowl, moose, and bear.
