Chapati: So disappointing!
The ambiance of this restaurant is lacking. I did not see one “good” table – all the tables, including ours, seemed to be oddly placed. I felt a bit exposed at our table. The service, as well, made me feel very awkward. The menu is extensive, and we were not sure what to order. When we asked the waiter for his recommendation, however, he was very tight lipped. During the meal, he seemed obsessed with keeping our water glasses filled, to the point of absurdity. On the whole, we just felt very uncomfortable.
Favorite Dish: We ordered the dinner for two, which included an appetizer platter, a curry, and a sampler of various meats including chicken and some sort of beef pucks. The chicken and the curry were not bad. The naan was excellent, but we were given two small triangles of naan each. We asked for more, and not only did it take a long time, but we were also charged for the additional basket. Absurd. After purchasing such a large meal, it seemed really chintzy. Who charges extra to refill a bread basket?
Worse, about fifteen minutes after leaving the restaurant, be both started to feel awful. Bloated, writhing, gut-distress sort of awful. It eventually passed about two hours later. Overall, it was just a really unpleasant experience.
The New Ideal Cafe: It's not the OLD Ideal Cafe!
I used to love eating here when I was a student. It has a great tin ceiling! But times change and it's now purple and serves a mix of ethnic & regional cuisine, including vegetarian and vegan options. The current window announces that it is now serving a new Guatemalen menu.
The Contented Cow: MOOOOOOO ...
I have zrim to thank for this recommendation. We had a GREAT lunch here. It's a limited menu, but well-prepared. Of note is that all prices are even and include the tax, so change isn't a big issue for you or them:) There is a terrace overlooking the Cannon River in the summer.
It is also the location for music performances on a regular basis.
The Contented Cow: an English pub on the riverfront
A friendly little pub in the heart of Northfield which sits upon the riverwalk. In the summertime the back patio (the pasture) is open for cocktails under the stars.
If you do visit the Contented Cow, tell Norman (the proprietor) that I sent you. He will flash a brilliant smile and give you a friendly pat on the back, however, it is unlikely that he will give you a break on the price of a pint. Nonetheless, this is the best place to be on a warm spring or summer's evening.
