A short distance south of Onamia you will find this historical marker to Izatys on the east side of U.S. Hwy. 169. It is owned by the State of Minnesota and placed by the Minnesota State Historical Society. Adjoining it is the Mille Lacs Indian Museum; across the highway is the Kathio Town Hall.
The inscription on the monument reads:
Izatys
In this vicinity stood
the grand Sioux village
of Izatys where Duluth
planted the French arms
on July 2, 1679.
The settlement was visited by
Father Hennepin in 1680.
About 1750 the Chippewa
moving westward from
Lake Superior, captured the
village, and by this decisive
battle drove the Sioux
permenantly into southern
Minnesota.

Favorite thing: Finally! Some pictures of ice fishing on Lake Mille Lacs! These photos are taken from the sothern end of the lake near the town of Onamia. You can drive out onto the ice from any of the resorts there.
