The Mpls/St. Paul airport is the headquarters for Northwest airlines (which I happened to work for before). Alot of people come to here on plane. Personally, I would rather chose doing a road trip because I love to see everything. If you really don't have a transportation of your own when you are in St. Paul..that is fine. There is a big bus system in the Twin Cities. There is many people that actually choose to take a bus to where they need to go. The only time I don't suggest that is if you don't like the cold. I never liked standing out in the cold waiting for a bus, but now I even started to notice that some of the bus shelters have something to where you can push a button and a heating light turns on. The areas around St. Paul are fairly easy to navigate with a good map as most roads are well marked and go north/south or east/west. Downtown is a mess, as the road scheme doesn't really make any sense. Make sure to have a map and ask directions. The best way to get around is by car, but there is a decent bus system (see link). Before you go inside the State Capitol to see its interior, don't forget to look up and admire the Quadriga, which is placed above the entrance. This sculpture made of copper and covered with gold leaf is very hard to miss though, as it catches and reflects the light even on a dreary day like today. Standing in front of the State Capitol your eyes will automatically be drawn to it. This beautiful sculpture was designed by Daniel Chester French and Edward Clark Potter and is titled "The Progress of the State". What makes this quadriga unique compared to other famous quadriga's in the world is that this one is entirely covered in gold leaf. If you look close at the second photo, you can see that the chariot driver is holding a banner with the state name of Minnesota. A "quadriga", with quadri- meaning four in Latin, is a four horsed chariot. The Romans and Greeks used the symbol of the quadriga a lot, for example on vases. This is not so surprising, as in the classical mythology, quadrigas were the vehicles of the gods. The 'modern' quadriga sculptures, like the one here in Saint Paul, are all based on the famous Triumphal Quadriga at the St. Marks Basilica in Venice. This is the only surviving ancient quardriga in the world. But you might have seen the quadriga in various other famous places as well, like on top of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris. Or maybe on top of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (unfortunately I don't have a photo of this one, as the Gate was under restoration at the time). Maybe I should also mention the quadrigas at the Semperoper in Dresden, Germany, the famous one on top of the Wellington Arch in London and of course I shouldn't forget the one on the Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome either. You might already have noticed the magnificent bronze grilles at the back of the altar area. But what your really should do is walk around the altar area to the back side of it, and enter into the "Shrines of the Nations". From here you can look up-close at these wonderfully decorated bronze grilles, which were designed by Albert Atkins in 1926. See photos 1 and 3. Photo 2 is a play of shadow and light created by the bronze grilles. What I furthermore liked in this part of the Cathedral of Saint Paul were once again the glass-stained windows. The one that especially captured me was the stained-glass window of Sancta Clara, which almost has an art-deco feeling to it. I can really recommend a visit to the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Although it is 'new', compared to the famous European Cathedrals, they have managed to capture a bit of that feeling. The end result is an interesting mix between old European architecture, but with a more modern American touch. The cathedral is open to the public from Sunday to Friday: 7:00 am - 9:00 pm and on Saturdays from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm. They also have guided tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 1 pm (except holidays). Saint Paul is the older and smaller of the twin cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. It is also the capitol of the state of Minnesota and has around 275.000 citizens. Well, sounds all good doesn't it? Sure there must be plenty to do in a city like that. Upon arrival I picked up a brochure about Saint Paul in order to get some more information and ideas what to do in the city. As I like architecture, the Historic Walking Path through downtown Saint Paul sounded like an excellent idea. The clash in architecture between the older buildings and the modern glass skyscrapers has always fascinated me, and I hoped that Saint Paul could give me some of that. The official brochure of Saint Paul has a nice map in the middle, giving some good suggestions which route to take with its Historic Walking Path and also included what there is to see along the way. And yes, of course I found the reflection of old and new which I so much love (3rd photo), but.... but.... somehow the city and I didn't quite get along. Was it the weather? Or was I just tired after three weeks of travelling?? On this sticky hot morning with a humidity going sky high and a thunderstorm brewing in the air, I and Saint Paul started to disagree more and more. Maybe I missed the blue sky, maybe I am not used to the pressing heat and humidity, but with every step I took, the more disappointed I got by Saint Paul. I didn't finish my historic walk, but instead escaped the downtown area in search of something better. And yes, I did find it, believe it or not: the Saint Paul's Cathedral! An absolute surprise as I never thought to find such a classical cathedral in North America. For me this was the absolute highlight of my visit to Saint Paul, but I'll write a bit more about that in some later tips. Without a doubt you will run into one or members of the Snoopy-family while walking around in Saint Paul. And who doesn't remember the cartoon of the Peanuts with its famous characters of Charlie Brown and his dog Snoopy and of course little Lucy and Linus with his cuddle blanket? When I see the characters of this comic I always start to smile. So seeing the statues in the heart of downtown Saint Paul was rather fun to me and of course I HAD to take a few photos :-) I spotted these fun little statues around Rice Park and the Landmark Plaza. It is not surprising that Saint Paul is linked to the comic strips of the Snoopy family as the famous cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, grew up in this city. When I got home of course I needed to search online for some comics of Snoopy and the gang. So if you are like me and start wondering again about those cartoons I would suggest you drop by on the official Peanuts website at http://www.snoopy.com/ Leave a Comment

Landmark Center by sim1 Somehow all roads lead to the Landmark Center. Hahaha, they did that for me anyway as I ended up in front of it several times. This hard to miss building in downtown Saint Paul’s is located opposite Rice Park and besides the Landmark Plaza. This building undoubtedly will draw your attention with its numerous turrets and gables, making it so different in architectural style then all the other buildings in the area. The Landmark Center used to be the "Old Federal Courts Building", but it has not only served as a Federal Court House, but also as a Post Office. The building dates back to 1902 and the architecture is by Willoughby J. Edbrooke. Famous "visitors" in the days that the Landmark Center was a courthouse were John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, and Baby Face Nelson. Nowadays its function has changed dramatically as after the renovation of 1978 it has been transformed into a cultural centre for music, dance and theatre and it also houses a variety of exhibitions.
