Loved our trip in August of 2004. My husband suprised me for our anniversary that year. It was well worth it to rush from our last appointment for our evening cruise along the St. Croix that night. We even got to see the Northern Lights that night, which is very unusual that time of year. We went out at about 9 or 9:30 and they had someone still...more
This is a nice place to stroll along the St. Croix River, people watch, or just sit and relax. There is a wide walking path that stretches about 1/2 mile. Along the way there are a few park benches to sit. There is also a large, lovely gazebo near the bridge that provides a shelter from the sun or rain.more
Pioneer Park is located on a hill just north of Downtown. From this location you get a beautiful view of downtown Stillwater, the St. Croix River and the historic lift bridge. There are many picnic tables and an interesting playground for the kids within the park and some interesting houses surrounding it.more
This is the first courthouse in the state of Minnesota and is still serves the same function today. You are free to tour the building during normal business hours - or there are daily tours. The courthouse is beautifully maintained and is fun to roam around. There are several public rooms on the first and second floor of the old building. Outisde...more
Stillwater is a wonderful place to just walk around and look at buildings! It has many, many old mansions and most of the downtown area stores consist of older buildings. Before going, I compiled a list/map of the "sights" I wanted to see: I took information from the visitor's guide I requested, then added the addresses of all the old B&Bs I could...more
This dinning train offers a romantic train ride with dinner and music of the swing/big band era. Their slogan is, "Travel Back in Time."It costs $65 per person and though the food is very good, you are paying for ambiance and that's why I did not put this in Restaurant Tips.All-in-all, it's a fun evening.more
Paddle boat ride on the St. Croix? It's not necessarily a 'Must See Activitie' but a fun one none the less. These cruises are rather reasonable in price. Depending on which Cruise and what you have for dinner, they range from $16.50 - $27.65 (the cruise without food is $11.70)The Sunday Brunch Cruise from 10:30 A.M. - 1;00 P.M. for...more

This famous German restaurant hides in the countryside in that area. You would have very good German food, with live accordion music, and can cross-country ski straight out of the restaurant porch if it is the season. A Sunday brunch buffet offers variety kind of authentic German food. Even on Sunday, you can also order from menu. Just like you...more
Take a paddleboat ride up the St. Croix. It's a great way to see a panoramic view of Stillwater and Eau Claire, Wisconsin on the other side.
Great place to shop for antiques, weather you are a collector or dealer. Modern store, with several dealers, the staff are great and friendly, willing to help and know what they are talking about. a wonderful variety of antiques , great quality. This mall is in a relatively modern building easy to shop in with everything well displayed and clean....more

Stillwater is often credited as being North America's first 'booktown.'
Loome Antiquarium Booksellers in downtown offers a large collection of rare and antique books.
When you that Hwy. 36 down to the St. Croix River and head into Stillwater, you'll almost always come upon traffic back up. Some of those cars are taking the only enterance into Wisconsin for miles, others are going to Stillawter but nevetheless, the trafic is slow moving.
This particular location is an area where Bing Crosby's mother grew up.
If you do come in winter (but why would you?), not all is lost. Head to Taylors Falls where you'll find Wild Mountain Ski Resort. They have over 60 runs. Granted, this is Minnesota, so you're not going to find incredible mountains, but you'll always have plenty of snow!
This is where I learned to ski and boy, was it a shock when I went at West and saw some real mountains!
The old Washington County Court House in Stillwater was built in the 1860s in a style described as a combination of Greek Revival and Italianate. Although it is no longer used as a courthouse, it is open to the public and has an interesting local history museum. It's one of those places where I feel proud to be a midwesterner.more
Favorite thing: The Stillwater Lift Bridge is quite a sight, though it has been the focal point of some controversy in recent years, as some would rather see it modernized and others are fighting to preserve it.
