Just northeast of Split Rock Lighthouse, you'll come across Gold Rock, a beautiful outcropping along the shore of Lake Superior. It's a beautiful place for a photo stop, but it is also historically important as the site of the famous shipwreck of the Madeira in 1905.
You can drive up Highway 61 just a mile or so northeast of Split Rock and you'll see a parking lot on the right side of the road where you can park and walk down to the shore and see Gold Rock.

Split Rock lighthouse is about 40 minutes up Highway 61 (northeast) from Two Harbors. You'll pass by Gooseberry Falls State Park on the way and when you do, you'll know you're about half-way there. You can pay $8 per adult to visit the lighthouse itself or just $7 per car and you can park just down the shore a ways, where you can hike around the rocks and get some great shots of the lighthouse on the rock.

Duluth is just a short drive south of Two Harbors and is the closest "big" city. You'll find a number of restaurants, hotels and shops in Duluth as well as miles of beautiful shoreline, some beautiful homes/mansions to gaze at and some interesting art and historical museums.

Tettegouche State park is another great park along the north shore. There many great hiking trails including a 23 mile one, I haven't taken it yet. Pic. is of Shovel point, it is the main feature at the park. (the rest of Off the beaten path pages are more pics. of Tetteguche)
