La Maison Gautier; AKA "The Old Place" was built by Fernando Gautier and his wife in 1867. Gautier moved here in 1866 and opened the Gautier and Sons Sawmill which was a major employer of the townspeople. This beautiful home was built using lumber from the mill. The mill was in operation until 1906 when a hurricane destroyed the mill and most of the timber supply. The building is open to the public and can be rented for private functions.

Gautier is a pretty and fast growing town of almost 20,000 (up 59% since 2000; part of the growth is due to the annexation of county land) located just east of the Biloxi/Gulfport area along US Highway 90 just south of Interstate 10. Gautier is a resort town with golf courses, nice beaches, historic sites and some very nice homes. The town was started when Fernando Gautier (for whom the town is named) started a homestead on the Pascagoula River in 1867. Gautier was one of the towns devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Gautier is located in Jackson County which was named for President Andrew Jackson.
