The Natchez Pageant: A Traditional Event

    Dancing around the May Pole
    1 more image

For a taste of traditional entertainment, The Natchez Pageant provides an evening of music, dance and lovely review featuring pretty girls and handsome boys all decked out in Southern splendor.

It also contained a dose of state pride, wonderfully presented (Hint: known also as The Confederate Pageant). This annual event is something Natchezians look forward to each year and we witnessed a heritage of participation in this event as we toured the Pilgrimage. Home after home had photographs and paintings of family members clothed in pageant regalia from years gone by.

The first matter of the evening was to introduce the President of the ladies garden club, then children of all ages paraded throughout the auditorium, taking their turns singing, dancing or in performing around the May Pole in flouncy gowns or appropriate uniforms. A small orchestra accompanied the presentations.

Our tickets were not in the best seats, so taking pictures was challenging. However, we were caught up in the excitement of the pageant and loved every minute of it! The performance was about 1 1/2 hours-2 hrs. in length, beginning at 8pm. The cost of admission was $15 per ticket

Isle of Capri Casino: Get your Free Dinner Buffet

    by Stephen-KarenConn Updated Jan 13, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Like so many towns along the Mississippi River, Natchez has a Casino. It is located on a riverboat permanently anchored beside the "under the hill" section, 200 feet below the main part of the city.

Here's a great tip. Go to the Isle of Capri Casino at dinner time and go hungry. We made the mistake of eating dinner just before our visit to the casino. When we signed up for the "rewards" card - just in case - we were each given a voucher for a free dinner buffet. This is only given to first time guests, and it must be used on the evening of your first visit. Although we had just eaten an hour before, I still went to the buffet and stuffed myself with a plateful of boiled crayfish and a slice of chocolate cake. It probably would have tasted better if I had been hungry.

Karen and I each invested $10 of our MAD MONEY on the slot machines. At one point we were up by $7.00, but we lost it all with half an hour. We should have quit while we were ahead. At least, with the free food, I figure we broke even.

Under-the-Hill Saloon: Mississippi Ramblings and stupors

by leafmcgowan Written Jun 24, 2005

    Under the Hill Saloon

"Once thieves, cutthroats, ladies-of-the-night and riverboat gamblers lurked in the shadows and trod the dusty streets. Up from the docks where the great river packets were tied they came – up Silver Street to the heart of the most notorious port on the river. Up from the river they came to the saloons and taverns seeking the pleasures these places provided – cheap whiskey, illicit love, or a winning hand at five-card stud… " ... set in the historic under-the-hill, this saloon has the old style western doors, and a friendly staff with its own set of loyal patrons. Good drinks and good service. A killer crawfish pie is also often available. Live bands on occasion and good times. Located next to the Mark Twain Guesthouse in case you don't want to wander far from the bar. Just across the street is the Mississippi River so the view is spectacular. The casino is also just a wander down the road across the street. Rated: 4 1/2 stars.
