There is a nice monument to the Perry County veterans on the courthouse grounds, along with a piece of military equipment.
There is a time capsule on the courthouse grounds buried on the bicentennial and to be opened on the tricentennial.
New Augusta is a town of under 1000 located in Southeast Mississippi along US Highway 98 near Hattiesburg. New Augusta is the county seat of Perry County. “Old Augusta” which was the county seat until 1906 is two miles away. As often happened, the county seat changed due to the coming of the railroad. Perry County was named after War of 1812 hero Oliver Hazard Perry.
