There appeared to be several decent places for lunch or dinner in Arrow Rock. However, they were all closed on that Monday. I was so pissed off. We wound up driving to a smoky convenience store about ten miles down the road. As bad as the food was, we were so hungry by then we actually enjoyed it.

There has been a tavern/restaurant in this building more or less continuously for 150 years. It's the kind of place that belongs in a George Caleb Bingham canvas. Today this is a family style restaurant with a limited menu - burgers and chicken, apple pie and ice tea - but in the early days of Arrow Rock this was probably a "rockin" center of frontier inebriation. In a way, it's a shame that the food lived here doesn't live up to its historic setting: a "steak n shake" with plain wood furniture. But - bearing in mind that Arrow Rock has fewer than 100 permanent residents - they have to make a go of this place, and it's a good thing that they've kept Huston's open.
