Carthage Things to Do

  • Visit the Carthage town square

Park your car and walk around this small town square. Visit the little shops found here for antiques and gifts to bring home. Take a look at the courthouse and read about Carthage history.

  • Precious Moments Chapel

Artist Sam Butcher used his Precious Moments art and characters in all of the numerous paintings and stain glass in this chapel. The cute little characters are used to bring Bible stories to life. Nancy and I went in on our own, not wanting to be tied down to a tour group, but found the tour guides so helpful, followed along to learn about the...

  • Precious Moments Park

This is a unique attraction, especially popular with Precious Moments fans and collectors (such as my oldest daughter). The grounds and gardens themselves are well worth the visit, and the chapel is inspiring. See my travelogue for additional photos.

Carthage Restaurants

  • 50's diner

The Carthage Deli is a 50´s motif restaurant that has been serving Carthage for 24 years. Specializing in a wide variety of sandwiches, cappuccinos, smoothies, malts and old-fashioned ice cream sodas. There's even a model of a Cadillac in the deli.

  • Great casual restaurant

Ranch House is a fantastic restaurant just located off the highway. It has a variety of foods including huge salads, great bbq, and great steaks. The service is great, it is moderately priced, and the atmosphere is a cowboy/country setting. I am a local, and this is one of my favorite restaurants! Fried Chicken Salad. The ranch at this restaurant...

Route 66 Drive in Cinema: ROUTE 66 : Tip 27 : Where's the back row...

by sourbugger Updated Jan 31, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

"Now if that's not real Americana, then I don't know what is"

"I believe that there used to be dozens of these cinemas right the way along route 66, but only a few remain now. This one has recently re-opened."

"I guess it's part of the heritage industry these days, people want to recapture those magical warm nights of youth"

"More likely they want to get away from their kids and get some leg-over"

"Well maybe, I'm too poetic and your too cynical. Anything worth seeing here then ?"

"No just the usual Hollywood film factory stuff aimed at teenagers"

"We'll give it a skip this time then"

by TheFish Written Oct 4, 2002

'There is a marvelous story of a man who once stood before God, his heart breaking from the pain and injustice in the world. 'Dear God,' he
cried out, 'look at all the suffering, the anguish and distress in your world. Why don't you send help?' God responded, 'I did send help. I sent
you.' When we tell our children that story, we must tell them that each one of them was sent to help repair the broken world - and that it is
not just the task of an instant or of a year, but of a lifetime.' - David J. Wolpe

Carthage Off The Beaten Path

  • Battle of Carthage State Historic Site

On this site in 1861, six thousand rebel troops forced Union soldiers to retreat. Honestly speaking, there is not much reason to check out this spot unless you are an avid Civil War buff. There's not much to see, and the descriptive signs are in poor repair.

  • This fabulous mural is inside...

This fabulous mural is inside of the Civil War Museum. Look also for the Petticoat Flag painting. It has an interesting story.

  • This park out side of Carthage...

This park out side of Carthage is where one of the Civil War battles in the area was. The bulletin board has information on it about that battle.

  • You really can't go to...

You really can't go to Carthage without visiting the Precious Moments Chapel Center. It is the main attraction, though not the only one. My mother has a large collection of those porcelein Precious Moments figures so I went there. It is a peaceful and beautiful place. Got a kick out of the signs near the Precious...

Visiting the precious moments Chapel Center. It was amazing inside. There is a shop where the collectables are actually cheaper. There's the Fountain of Angels which was gorgeous. The entire place was just beautiful, but not many people know it exists.

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.
