View of Taneycomo from scenic lookout in town

We're surrounded by Lake Taneycomo and Bull Shoals -so one must take a boat out or rent a pontoon and fish or just take a picnic. The waters are too cold to swim but the trout like it! The kids can just cast in down by the Dam and catch some small ones. The evening sunsets here are beautiful. There's a beautiful scenic lookout coming into town.

The kids in 1988 at Laura's home

by arkryger Updated Feb 28, 2004

If you grew up reading the Little House books and then watching the TV series-and you have kids that age-you need to go to Mansfield, Mo.-about an hour's drive east on Hwy 160 to Ava, the take Hwy 5 up to Mansfield-there you will find the home that Laura wrote the books in-originally restored and has a gift shop-we took the kids and a picnic one day and they loved it-now 16 years later we plan to take Laura, my granddaughter, in March who is 7-that's her Mama, Alea, the oldest in the picture!

Our kids enjoying the fun in 1988

The best place we found was down by the Powersite Dam-you can drive there and it's safe and usually they can catch a trout in early morn or late afternoon-water's too cold to swim though. Take a picnic. Can also get to it by walking the trail from the park across the bridge down to the end.
