    The Plaza at Christmas

by NorineP Written Dec 20, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: One of the nicest views of the Plaza is during the Christmas season. All the buildings are lit up with thousands of lights. When it snows, it is so beautiful. It's a great place to shop for Christmas presents when the snow is gently falling.

This isn't my picture, but I will have one of my own soon

Favorite thing: See the Country Club Plaza during the holiday light season.

Fondest memory: The entire 14-square block area of the Plaza is illuminated with over 200,000 jewel-colored bulbs beginning every Thanksgiving evening and continuing until the second week of January. Spanning 75 miles, the lights outline every tower, dome, balcony, courtyard and building found on the Country Club Plaza. Hundreds of thousands of people show up for the lighting and make special pilgramages to the city to see the lights each year. Really beautiful!

Favorite thing: he Wild Boar fountain is a reproduction of The Wild Boar of Florence. Cast for bronze in 1857, this is one of three copies made from the original mold. Children (and adults) rub his nose, which keeps it shiny while the rest of the boar has darkened. Coins tossed into the box go to a children’s hospital. So toss in a few coins for the children

Favorite thing: If you like to shop, head to the Plaza. It is a beautiful area with practically every store imaginable. What I like best is that you walk outside rather than your traditional mall, and so it is easy to take in the city's atmosphere.

Fondest memory: This pic is of my friend Allison and I taken in the plaza--we couldn't resist as we were walking around shopping.

    1st Class Location

Favorite thing: KC has many positives but the Plaza is unique to Kansas City. The Plaza is a vast mix of restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques, fine retailers, architecture...all in an open setting. Minutes away from Westport, Union Station, and Downtown Kansas City, the Plaza is a great place to start or end your evening, or spend an entire weekend enjoying the various sites close by. If art is your thing, spend a day at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. See why Kansas City is known as "The City of Fountains". Also, if you can visit during the holidays, all the buildings on the Plaza are adourned with lights.

Fondest memory: Too many to list....KC Chiefs games, KC Royals Games, Rockhurst University, many nights on the town. So much to explore. Visit or You'll feel at home in Kansas City as the people are generally welcoming.

Favorite thing: See the Plaza, a recreation of Seville, built by some obsessed American developer in (I think) the 1920s. Complete with fountains and filigreed froufrou, the Plaza has kind of an artificial feel, but the shopping, eating, and even the relaxation by a bubbling fountain are quite real. Don't miss the barbecue and KC's jazz heritage, situated as it is along the New Orleans/Chicago axis.
