Faded Glory But Enjoy It Anyway
If you stay in Kansas City long enough you will end up at some point on the Country Club Plaza. This once great Kansas City landmark has become a shell of it’s former self. It was as recently as 15 years ago filled with local restaurants and shops and only smattering of national chains. Now it has gone the way of most good shopping districts in the U.S. It is completely over run with mediocre national “we look like local” chains and not so subtle chains. There are only a few local vendors left. (My ranting is over)
Now put that aside and enjoy the place there are sculptures and fountains all over the place. Most of the buildings are in the Spanish/Moorish style that the builder J.C Nichols loved from his travel abroad. It is a great place for a stroll and to enjoy a nice summer, spring or fall evening.
There are still a few nice stores and some good local restaurants. So have an adventure finding them as you by pass the “Olive Cheesy Garden Factory” type places.

Strolling the Plaza - The Brush Creek Walkway
The Country Club Plaza has been Kansas City's favorite spot for a stroll for many decades. It's an intergenerational, multi-ethnic activity, too - if you're in to people watching, you'll see all we have to offer. You can also window shop in the finest stores, lounge around a fountain listening to KC jazz by the best local players (weekend afternoons in the summer), or dine in some great eateries.
A favorite place to walk is along Brush Creek. You can walk streetside, or right next to the stream, itself.
On September 13, 1977, a ferocious flash flood caused by 16 inches of rain in two days roared through this area drowning more than 25 people and causing millions of dollars of damage. As a result, the city and the corp of engineers redesigned the creek bed. It is now much safer and far more beautiful than before that awful evening.
This charming sculpture, "New Friends," of two children playing with birds, sits along the walkway.
