Fine Arts, Kansas City
The first Friday of every month you can walk around the Crossroads Art District and find a culmination of art galleries, studios, and restaurants in the Crossroads Arts District.
Some of the studios even offer free wine and samplings of food. Its alot of fun just to walk around with friends and mingle and see amazing artists. Summer and Spring months are the most crowded and gallerys stay open 7-9 and free admission.
There is a lot of live theatre in Kansas City, and "The Rep" is its premier organization. This fully professional resident theatre company presents six performances annually, including the incredibly popular "Christmas Carol" - a must see during the holiday season. The rep was founded in 1964 and performs in the Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Free parking.
Opera is live and well in the heartland of America! Kansas City's long-lived Lyric Theatre, one of the finer of the many regional opera companies, presents four annual productions, two in the fall, two in the spring. You won't see Domingo or Carreras here, but you will thrill to the voices of stars in the making. Coming in spring of 2003 are "Abduction from the Seraglio" and "Rigoletto."
Dress Code: Some dress to impress, but more go dressy casual - this is Kansas City, not Boston. Nobody is going to look down their nose at you if you're in jeans or slacks.
Kansas City's classical music scene is surprisingly strong - and as with most cities, the symphony orchestra is at the center. Currently led by dynamic young conductor, Anne Manson, the symphony is undergoing a wonderful surge of artistic growth, and is one of those rare orchestras not facing financial difficulties. The only drawback is the current performance venue, The Lyric Theatre, which is cramped and unappealing. In 2006 or 2007 it will be replaced by an architectural wonder - the new Kansas City Performing Arts Center. Students receive drastically reduced prices within two hours of the performance.
Dress Code: Anything goes... Tux, blue jeans, just leave the baby with a sitter.
