Christmas at the Country Club Plaza

There's a special feeling of festivity during the holiday seasons at the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri - largely due to the traditional lighting of the Plaza, and thousands of pedestrians taking in the sights.

One of many courtyards on the Country Club Plaza, this is often a place to hear some of KC's fine musicians perform. The stylized penguin sculptures have a special appeal for children and have provided many a parent with an excellent photo opp.

    Neptune Fountain

The Roman god of the sea and his three attributes, the trident, dolphin and sea-horse, is one of the more popular fountains on the plaza. The fountain was transported from its original site at Bromsgrove Guild, Worcestershire, England, 1911. During the cold of winter, greenery replaces the water fountains, as seen in this photo.

The Plaza: place to shop and watch people

The plaza has that Seville, Spain flare. It was built by Mr. Nichols after the world war II. He was in Europe and was in love with the architecture of Seville. This shopping track is a fun place to be in Kansas City with many designer shops, boutiques, good restaurants, bars, and Coffee shops. In the Spring and summer time, there are concerts and art exhibitions. You can also hop on the ferry with a pink lemonade and relax after you shop.

The Country Club Plaza has a Spanish architecture modeled after Seville, Spain. It was designed in 1922 as the nation's first suburban shopping district. The Plaza lights at Christmas time are world famous (I'll get some pictures this year).

The Kansas City Country Club Plaza is one of the must see areas of Kansas City. This place has a little bit of something for everyone. There are multiple shops from low to high end prices. There are numerous great restaurants and coffee shops. You can catch a movie, stop in a pub/bar or bookstore, or even catch a boat ride on brush creek or a horse drawn carriage ride through the streets. Tennis courts are located right off the plaza. There are multiple hotels lining the plaza as well including the Ritz. This area has beautiful parks and fountains. The plaza really becomes packed at Thanksgiving. Every building is decked out in lights for the holiday season and the turning on ceremony is very popular but crowded. Numerous festivals are held on the plaza streets during the year. This area is very popular for romantic dates.

Spend some time in Country Club Plaza
This area was designed after Seville, Spain which is very different architecture for the midwest. It's really beautiful and there is a lot of great shopping and dining establishments. They have a great website that outlines all of the shops, restaurants, etc that are in the area - www.countryclubplaza.com

Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City is amazing.
There are hundreds of antique doll houses. Some of them have been built with such precision that they are amazing. Imagine a doll house with gutters, the gutters even have rust spots, the down spout for the gutters has a bird sitting on it, the bird is looking at a spider in a tiny cobweb. There is so much detail you can spend a long time looking at each one.

Kansas City hosts one of the world's first shopping centers, Country Club Plaza, known generally as the Plaza. Built in the early 20th century, and modeled on the townscape of Seville, Spain, the Plaza hosts theatres, upscale shops, and restaurants, all outdoors in a charmingly walkable environment. Add intricate tilework and bubbling fountains, blue skies and cute girls, and you're got yourself a first-rate shopping district.

Public parking is available. Great area to explore on foot. There are many unique shops and restuarants. The architechture is beautiful. Kansas City is noted for it's fountains and Country Club Plaza has one of the best. It is beautifully lit during the Christmas season.
