The Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery: Mary Hostetter Makes Her Dream a Reality

Dee & Jill at The Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery

In August of 1985, Mary Hostetter went from working out of her house to opening her own restaurant in a quaint old building that is located at 2nd and Mill Street. At that time, Mary says that she dreamed of having her own successful restaurant and she went one step further: she predicted "people would have to wait in line to get a table at the Blue Owl." Boy, was she prophetic!
The restaurant is Blue and White on the outside with beautiful double doors with oval, etched glass. The waitresses dress in long pinafores, serving lunch on blue-and-white china. Inside is like a home with wood, tougue-in-groove wooden walls(Railroad car siding), a fireplace, and country window treatments of lace. The warm wooden floors are "charmingly out of level".
There is a Veranda, which can be used year-round with a newly designed enclosure. There is live German music and parking in the restaurant's lot. Additionally, there is a new retail bakery area and a "Lucianna's Tea Room".
    Open: Tuesday-Friday 10am-3pm
    Saturday-Sunday 10am-5pm
    Breakfast 10am-11:30am
The Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery serves:
    Salads with homemade dressings.
    Homemade soups made fresh daily.
    Croissant Sandwiches
    Other Sandwiches
    Quiches
Baked Potato with all the fixings
    Soup & Salad Combos
Curly fries, country fries, German Potato Salad, Hawaiian Cole Slaw
    Famous for Mary's Desserts
Assorted Pastry, Cakes, Cheesecakes, pies, sugar-free desserts, and Chocolate Specials.

Favorite Dish: Both Jill and I tried:
the White Chili, a blend of white chicken meat, great white northern beans, green chilies, and Monterey Jack Cheese.
    We also shared a dessert:
"Death By Chocolate, layers of rich, fudgy brownie, drizzled with Kahlua, topped with Chocolate Mousse, crunchy Heath Bars, and real whipped cream!

It's worth mentioning that they offer 35 different pies!

It's worth the trip to Kimmswick just to eat at

The Old House (Old HouseSteak House): 1770 Log House Serves As Restaurant

by deecat Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    The Old House Steak House

The Old House (1770) is the largest and most historical log building to be relocated to Kimmswick. Originally, it was on Highway 61-67 in the part of Arnold, Missouri, which was known as Beck, Missouri. It was a dog trot (first two rooms, one on each end with a roof over a space between the two rooms) and said to date from Revolutionary times.
A second story and a back two story log wing were added in 1831. It was used as an overnight stop for travelers and later as a tavern. Some say that General U.S. Grant came here when he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks.
The house was taken down in 2 wks in 1973; however, the reconstruction stretched over five years.
Today it is called The Old HOuse Steak House. It is a great restaurant "whose low ceilings and rustic decor carry through the building's historic theme."

Favorite Dish: Specialities include Prime Cut Steaks, Chicken, Fish, Homestyle Soups and Homemade Desserts.
Open for Lunch and Dinner with a full bar.
    RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED
    Prices are moderate to expensive.
Available at The Old House Steak House if 8 or more sign up is GHOST STORIES told by latern light. Reservations Thurs-Sat, 6:45pm & 8pm (636)464-0378
