During the 1870s Jesse James and his gang knew only one hiding place: The Meramec Caverns and their 23 miles of galleries. The caverns and their stalactites are worth the detour, particularly Stage Curtain, a 70 million year-old mineral cascade measering 90 feet tall and over 50 feet wide. You must also visit The Antique Toy Museum and the Jesse James Museum, where you can find out if the outlaw really was gunned down in 1882.

Saint Louis is the center of a large metropolitan area that extends into five counties of Missouri and the five counties of Illinois. It has important financial institutions and manufacturing industries. The symbol for modern St. Louis is the Architecturally striking Gateway Arch, which commerates the city's role as a Gateway to the west.

Favorite thing: Route 66 Motors and General Store is one of today's thriving gift shops doing business along the old alignment of Route 66. It's a must-see stop along the old road. ROLLA, MO.

Favorite thing: KIRKWOOD. Established in 1853. Today it is a 9-square mile community with a population of roughly 30,000. Over 300 acres of park land can be found throughout the community. The city's fire department has three seperate fire houses located strategically throughout the city. Fire house 2 was built in 1929 and is the oldest operating fire house in St. Louis county.
