Miso in Clayton: Best Sushi in St. Louis - maybe

    by Sunshine64 Updated Jan 3, 2006

It's hard to belive this place is in St. Louis! The setting and atmosphere seem much more urban/costal. The food is delicious - which may surprise you for Sushi / Pan-Asian in the landlocked midwest.

Don't be fooled as you approach the restaurant and see NO diners through the windows. The main dining and lounge area is downstairs.

    Favorite Dish: First Visit:
The sushi was good - I had tuna, eel, and smoked salmon. The eel was espically yummy. Also had a couple of rolls that were good.

Started with 2 appetizers - calamari and shrimp tempura - both were outstanding. I'll go out on a limb and say this was the best calamari I've ever eaten.

Our meal was $60 each - including tip, but we over-ordered a bit, and had 3 cocktails each. I think you could get by for $30 - $40.

    Second Visit:
Went on a Thursday night, which was DJ night. Were looking for somewhere to eat sushi after 9 PM in St. Louis, and this was the only option. The sushi seemed fresher on the first visit, maybe because of the hour, or the lack of a smoke filled bar playing dance music. Although it was still pretty good, it didn't rate as well as my first visit, so I wouldn't recommend your first visit under these circumstances.

Oh gosh...I have to say my favorite place to eat is India Rasoi. There are several in St. Louis. They all are great.

Also, there is a small, modest chineese restautant in midtown St. Louis called Rock Hill Chop Suey...give it a try. The owners are sweethearts.

by trilbi Written Aug 26, 2002

There were few places where I really liked to hang around when I was living here. They are:

Blueberry Hill, 6504 Delmar, (314) 727-0880, a place where to meet with friends to have a beer and eat good burgers. Live music on weekends.

Broadway Oyster Bar,736 S Broadway, (314) 621-8811, where you can taste cajun creole cuisine and listen to live jazz and blues music. Try the steamed crawfish, a sort of very small lobsters with a delicate flavour, one of the few things in USA that HAS a season (January to late June). Try also Gumbo, a spicy soup, and Jambalaya , a rice dish with different kinds of meat and seafood.

Bar Italia, 13 Maryland Plaza (314) 361-7010. An Italian style bar where you can just sit and have a cappuccino in the afternoon. The food is good too. As you can imagine being italian I am not particularly fond of italian food abroad. Actually I carefully avoid it, I much prefer eating local specialties. Sorry then if I cannot advice of any italian restaurant.

    Dressel's, 419 North Euclid (314) 361-1060

    More to come...

    Off the beaten path:

Elsah Landing Restaurant , 420 East Main Street, Grafton, IL 62037, (618) 786-7687. A very nice little place where you can stop if you take a drive out to the Great River Road to admire the splendid fall colors along the Mississippi. Great soups, desserts and bread. Their recipe book it's one of my favourite. Home made jams for sale. Book in advance.

Trendy decor, decent, but not fabulous food and disorganized service.
I ate the Spinach Salad with Asian Pears and Warm Bacon Sherry Dressing and was underwhelmed.
