Laclede's Landing, Saint Louis

The old historical port was invaded by restaurants and bars, becoming the meeting point downtown. It’s a good preserving work, in a small area, which makes it easy to have a general look, and shortens the walk in the irregular cobblestone pavements.

Basically what is left are a few bars, and not much else. That maybe was what was intended to begin with, but troubles have seemed down here and fights used to be the "in thing". The streets are rough, to say the least, and the red brick needs a lot of work to level out the depressions and ruts and dips. It could ruin a vehicle bottom by scraping.

I am not impressed with the bars, and it usually smells like vomit and stale brew and smoke-like in New Orleans as I recall. A new casino is there called Lumiere Place, but it is struggling to keep above the funk. The renovation of these old warehouses started in early 1980's,. and may go back to closing them some time in the near term.

Described as the "Bourbon or Beale Street" of St. Louis. No offense, but I don't think so... This is the "old" part of town, with buildings dating back to the 1840s, now housing various restaurants, nightclubs, offices, and entertainment facilities. Cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriage rides add to the charm of this quarter of town. It seems more tame than Bourbon or Beale, but that's not a BAD thing!

Easily accessible by the Metrolink (Arch-Laclede's Landing stop), there is ample parking close by, and it is a quick .5 mi walk from the Arch.

Originally serving the riverboats, the waterfront was lined by warehouses. As traffic moved away from the river to trains and trucks, the district became abandoned. It was renovated in the 1980's and now houses a variety of stores and restaurants. The range of things run from historic books to home furnishings. Off-beat coffee houses to up scale French or Itallian Restaurants. Even if all you do is take a walk throught the cobblestone streets, an hour or two is worth the diversion.

The Landing is a great place on the riverfront of the Mississippi that still has the cobblestone streets and gaslight style streetlamps. It is a grid of bars and restaurants that include Planet Hollywood, Spaghetti Factory, Mississippi Nights (music club), and the Big Bang, only to name a few. My favorite is The Big Bang, a bar that features two large pianos and great sing along songs. Drink up! Because participation is encouraged!

If you are going downtown for a Cardinals' game then it is very likely you will be paying to park. I highly recommend parking at The Landing and either making the short walk to the stadium or jump on the MetroLink and ride to the Busch Stadium stop. This will allow you to have dinner on the landing and then, after the game, you can walk down to the Archgrounds in the Jefferson Memorial Expansion Park and walk through the park back to the Landing where you can share drinks with the rest of Cardinals' Nation while celebrating their victory! :-)

The wax museum house 150 famous people and historical figures depicted in wax at this downtown. It was the first time I've seen religous depictions in a wax museum. The chamber of horrors in the basement is cool especially after you've been drinking on the landing:)

This is the oldest, most historic part of St. Louis, and still a very vibrant part of the city. It's an excellent place to shop, eat, or just watch the world go by.
