Soulard Farmer's Market in the...
Soulard Farmer's Market in the city. This market is more than 100 years old, and farmers still come in every saturday to sell fresh produce at really low prices. There are also some artists with things to sell. A lot of immigrants and all kinds of ethnic groups come down - another great place to people watch and take in the sights.
It's never open on Sunday - the family donated the property with 2 stipulations. 1) there can be no bars adjacent to it and 2) cannot be open on Sundays. If either is broken the land will be immediately returned to the family.
There are some nice restaurants here
Soulard is known as one of the party districts of St. Louis. Personally, I visit for lunch or an early dinner. The evenings have a younger and drunk crowd.
Soulard is primarily old red brick buildings. It is slowly improving as a neighborhood.
One caveat, I do know several people who have experienced car break-ins. That is why I do not go at night.
But... if you are of the partying kind ...this is the district to go to.
a place to do a pub crawl
Soulard is the pub district in St Louis. You'll find lot great pubs starting from Mcguirks to Mollys. This is also where the annual Mardi Gras celebration is held. The month of February they would have the taste of Soulard, the dog parade then the second biggest mardi gras parade in the country is held here.
This area also boast the Soulard Farmer's Market which is open year round, a best place to grab some organic food grown by local farmers.
The Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis is home to the nation's 2nd largest Mardi Gras party. The parade usually takes place around 10 a.m. Once the parade is over, everyone gets blitzed on overpriced beer and hurricanes. Its a great time, but be sure to know where your friends are before you get there, since in the crowd cell phones rarely work.
