Before heading west, I had reseved myself a car from Budget rental for the great price of US$60 including all taxes and charges for two days of unlimited driving.
The car was a pleasure to drive, a good thing since I put 520 miles (850 km) on it in two days. Gas was running at about US$1.78 per US gallon and it cost me a total of US$28 to fill it up before I dropped it off at the Missouri International Airport.Related to:

Driving Offers Unusual Sights
While driving from St. Charles, Missouri toward Chicago, we saw a most unusual sight [which we never could have seen in a plane or on a train, but perhaps via a bus. I was driving, and I said to Allan, "Check out the CAMEL on that truck!" Of course, Allan did not believe me until he looked up from his paper and was flabergasted. He struggled to get the digital camera out of my purse, and struggled more trying to figure out how to use the camera. I always take the photos with this new camera of mine so he did not have a clue how to use it. I was trying to stay even with the truck so he could put down the window and take the picture. The car behind me was getting pretty angry. He finally succeeded in taking the photo, and then the truck driver smiled and waved!
We assumed that the CAMEl was being taken to a zoo. He/she certainly was a good looking and healthy looking animal.
So, I say, when in Missouri, drive...you'll never know what new, exciting sights you might discover.Related to:

Gateway Riverboat Cruises
Established in 1884, Gateway Riverboat Cruises is the oldest river-excursion boat company operating on the Mississippi River. The vessels include the Tom Sawyer and the Becky Thatcher, replicas designed to resemble the old Mississippi River paddle boats.
One-hour narrated cruises are operated daily. They run along the Saint Louis riverfront and historical sights and attractions are pointed out, explained, and described. Two-hour dinner cruises, featuring a live Dixieland band and prime rib, are operated on weekends and selected dates. There are also five-hour lock-and-dam cruises to the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers which are run in September and October.

Missouri by bike
My friend Dave lives southwest of St. Louis and he's a motorcycle maniac, therefore we get along pretty good! On the occasion of one of my visits there the weather was too good to stay away from rolling around and it was a perfect occasion for him to show me his riding playground. We pulled out of his garage a few bikes - not all of them though! - and went through gentle hills criss-crossed by spectacular deserted roads. We swapped bikes during the day ride and it was pure fun!Related to:

Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport
Today, there are no intercontinental flights into or out of Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport (STL), and the only international flights are to and from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Now-defunct TWA-Trans World Airlines was once based here, and offered nonstop flights to Europe. International travelers who want to go to Saint Louis will now have to fly into another American gateway city in order to get a connection to Saint Louis. The airport is located ten miles (16 kilometers) northwest of the downtown area.
Airlines serving Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport: Air Canada Express, Air Choice One, AirTran Airways, American Airlines, American Connection, American Eagle, Cape Air, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Connect, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways, and US Airways Express.
The best way to get to...
The best way to get to Missouri is by airplane or car. If you decide to take the plane, there are a number of flights within North America to St. Louis and even one flight from London with American Airlines. I don't know about the Kansas City flights.
Within Missouir the easiest way is to take the car. But if you want to travel from Washington, MO to Kansas City, for example, you can also take the train.
st. louis finally has a metro
it may not get you to all the places you need to go, but most importantly, it will take you to the busch stadium! finally, you don't have to take a cab, drive after drinking, or have a d.d. after the game. drink on!
Springfield/Branson Regional Airport is impossible - it is very expensive. Better to fly to St. Louis or Kansas City, and rent a car & drive for 3 1/2 hours. But, if you can't, try to join a tour.
Small town southern Missouri
The main route is 65 from the north Springfeild and south-Arkansas-.The roads are good and have been updated for the flow of tourists.76 west takes you into town-right to the shows and accomodations and to the left to Old Branson. The best way there is by car--By air -Springfeild then rent a car to get around--40 miles to Branson
Take a Ride on the Metro-Link
The MetroLink (St. Louis's subway / light rail system) is a great way to get around town. You can take it from St. Louis International Airport to downtown STL, Busch Stadium, America's Center, the Savvis Center, Union Station, Laclede's Landing, and across the river to the Casino Queen among other destinations. It is very affordable and clean. Many kids like riding trains and the Metrolink is a reasonable way to do that.Related to:
