Things to Do

COPPER KING'S DALY MANSION

COPPER KING'S DALY MANSION, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  A southern mansion in the wilds of the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, right in the middle of the town of Hamilton. It was in the 1880's that Marcus Daly, founder of the Anaconda Mining Company and established the town of Hamilton, with his lumber industry, built his "modest"...

Definitely a Local's Bar - but not unfriendly!

Definitely a Local's Bar - but not unfriendly!, Hamilton

johngayton Says:  This is the sort of bar I personally love, an eclectic clientele united with a common purpose - have a few beers and enjoy! So much did I enjoy my first visit on the Sunday afternoon I just had to return later that evening for more (purely to research the range of local brews...

Lost Horse Overlook

Lost Horse Overlook, Hamilton

EllenH Says:  This is such an incredible view and you do not even have to hike to it. (not that there is anything wrong with hiking) But some people cannot hike up a mountain to find these kind of views, this is a drive all the way to the top. The day we went was the 4th of July, we saw a...

THE KITCHEN: BREAKFAST SPECIALS

THE KITCHEN: BREAKFAST SPECIALS, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  Okay. There are more restaurants in Hamilton than "Spice of Life" and this is one of them, almost across the street. A simple diner but with the feel of yesteryear. Straight forward food and prices. The friendly staff and the noisy patrons attest to the satisfaction of the...

SPICE OF LIFE: THE HAUNT OF VTer EllenH

SPICE OF LIFE: THE HAUNT OF VTer EllenH, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  According to my high school buddy, the Spice of Life Restaurant is one of the better places to dine out in Hamilton. I missed out due to the Holiday Weekend. They were closed. Can you believe that I drove 1206 miles to have a dinner at the Spice of Life and it was closed....

The Bank: Tasty and affordable, Hamilton

tracy69 Says:  Food was delicious, affordable and the service was wonderful. The atmosphere was so relaxing and peaceful! I was so taken care of and I will most definately return for another steak in a month or two. The steak, fresh veggies and the fresh bread.

The Signal Grill: Great Food, Great Service

The Signal Grill: Great Food, Great Service, Hamilton

LouiseMiller Says:  Signal Grill is in historic downtown Hamilton. The food is the best in the Bitterroot Valley. Best, natural steaks and prime rib, European Pizzas on Thursday nights and Sushi on Wednesday nights. Best burgers (reminds me of the old Signal Bar burgers with their "secret"...

Maggie's: Yet Another American Breakfast Rave!

Maggie's: Yet Another American Breakfast Rave!, Hamilton

johngayton Says:  If you didn't know Maggie's was here you would never find it purely by chance. The entrance is on Main Street and if you were passing you would assume that the doorway leads to a solicitors firm or some such like. This is definitely a hidden gem and according to our local...

Spice of Life: Good Food, No Service

Spice of Life: Good Food, No Service, Hamilton

dmwmtgal Says:  The food was a good value. However, the service left a lot to be desired. The waitress bordered on rude and treated us like we were an inconvenience. For my buck, I'd rather go across the street to "The Kitchen" where the food and service are both excellent. I had the...

Hi Vince wherever you are

Some people would consider this a dive I am sure but there isn't really a whole lot to do in Hamilton at night. So The rainbow bar where locals hang together is packed when they have live music.

Dress Code: No dress code, this is a bar where bikers, cowboys, farmers, and the rest of us all get along. (most of the time)

WILD TURKEYS...GOBBLE, GOBBLE

sOne of the first things my old high school buddy and his wife did for my wife and me was to take us on a tour of the area. The highlight of this driving tour was spotting all the wildlife that make this part of Montana home. The kick of the drive was spotting two wild turkeys only a few feet from the road. Made my mouth water for turkey pot pie and Wild Turkey Bourbon.

More than turkeys are seen on a drive around the Bitterroot Valley. Deer, sheep, cattle, and even Buffalo are spotted, along with many birds. Worth a drive to see the Bitterroot river, the forest and St. Mary's Peak that make this part of Montana shine.

Warnings and Dangers

NO BULL, DEER CROSSING

NO BULL, DEER CROSSING, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  Hamilton is in the center of the Bitterroot Valley and many animals thrive in the area. One of the most common is muledeer. When driving around town or the twisting country roads, be on the lookout for deer crossing the road. Deer me, drive with caution.

BEARS in town?

BEARS in town?, Hamilton

EllenH Says:  He was sooo cute but he is a baby and his mama was not to be seen. There lies the danger, anywhere a baby bear is a mama is sure to follow and look out if she thinks you are messing with her cub. Hey I was only taking his picture.

NEZ PERCE SAD TALE AT BIG HOLE

NEZ PERCE SAD TALE AT BIG HOLE, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  The wind was biting and the snow was beginning to fall, but my wife and I journeyed on, determined to arrive at the sleeping camp of the Nez Perce to see and feel the sorrow that happened here, so many years ago. It was Memorial Day and quite appropriate to have walked the...

DARBY, MONTANA. HOWDY STRANGER!

DARBY, MONTANA. HOWDY STRANGER!, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  About a twenty minute drive south on Highway 93 from Hamilton, sits the quaint western town of Darby. Boardwalks are here as well as spirited western shops and Native American arts and crafts. Worth the drive just for the scenery.

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS & GIFT STORE

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS & GIFT STORE, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  The Brooks Christmas & Gifts store is a year-round winter season gift store and its all displayed in a 1894 Victorian home. Visiting this store is amazing for the year-round Christmas related gifts. The real kick for me is seeing this old Victorian sitting in a small rural...

SAINT MARY'S MISSION, WHERE MONTANA BEGAN, Hamilton

travelgourmet Says:  Located just minutes from Hamilton lies the town of Stevensville and the home of the birthplace of Montana, Saint Mary's Mission. Founded in 1841 by a Jesuit Priest, Fr. Pierre DeSmet, S.J., from Belgium, at the request of the native american people in the area, the Salish....

all water sports and hiking

all water sports and hiking, Hamilton

EllenH Says:  Lake Como is THE place to go on a hot summer day. Well the river is nice too but Lake Como is the place to go to kayak, canoe, sail, jetski, swim, fish, hike, camp, and sunbathe. One thing you do need is a day pass which you have to buy in Hamilton before you leave town....
