The New Atlas Bar in Columbus, Montana is worth a stop.
The bar has been in business since before Prohibition, which coincidentally, looks like the last time the 60+ animal mounts in there were cleaned. We have been there about 5 times, and there were rarely ever more than about 3 other people there. That is what makes it great, you have a cool old bar to yourself! The back bar was moved from a bar in Butte, and just about all the furniture is original. There is even a little room towards the front where women were allowed to sit as they weren't allowed in the main bar in back in the 30's. Mel Gibson (yes, the actor) has a ranch nearby and he has reportedly stopped in for a beer.

Dress Code: You are safest in any Montana bar wearing Levi's, cowboy boots, a 'Rockin' R Bar' cap, and a ' I wish the Californians would leave' T-shirt.

Any riverbank with a relatively flat surface, shady trees, and reasonable lack of mud makes for the perfect campsite along Montana's wild and scenic river, assuming of course that the spot isn't private property. Bureau of Land Management maps detail which areas are accessible for camping, and which aren't.
Imagine waking up before dawn, looking up and seeing an August moon so bright, a flashlight is unnecessary. The Missouri River flow provides ambient background music, and birds sing their morning wakeup call. Now imagine looking ahead and seeing a rabbit scamper across your campsite. The serenity and calm makes the daily hustle of a city seem so irrelevant.

Dress Code: Cotton garments are strictly prohibited! Nylon, CoolMax, polyester -- possibly GoreTex if it rains. (GoreTex, of course, named for the 2000 presidential candidates.) Mornings along the river can be chilly, so bring a polar fleece vest, especially if you're not naturally well-insulated.
