Another stunning day trip you could take out of the Missoula vacinity is to take Hwy 200 east to Hwy 83 north through the Seely/Swan Valley. The Bob Marshall Wilderness will be to the east and the rugged, very remote Mission Wilderness is to the west. Another worthy place of mentioning for accomodations is the Holland Lake Lodge. I know the website doesn't do the area justice with photos but I will let you in on one secret...it is absolutely heavenly. Do me a favor though, don't visit too often as we don't want a croud when we get there:))) Although Seely Lake has some decent lodging, with Holland Lake Lodge just 25 minutes north I wouldn't think twice about staying there...back to the day drive... Hwy 83 comes out at the north end of the Flathead Lake Valley. This is the largest natural lake west of the Missippippi River and it is gorgeous. When you are done drooling at the incredible beauty and the fantasy of moving here, head south to Poulson to Hwy 93 south to Missoula. The picture is of the Flathead Lake about midway looking east to the Mission Wilderness. Oh I almost forgot, there is a great little winery called the Mission Moutain Winery. Believe it or not these guys make a great wine.

    Wild Horse Island

    by emw.weaver Written Dec 18, 2011

In the middle of Flathead Lake in Polson, Montana is Wild Horse Island. It is exactly what it sounds like, an island populated with wild horses. It also boasts of big horn sheep, deer, and the occasional bear that swims over. The first time I went there were 5 horses and the second time I went we were lucky enough to be the first people to ever see the new foal born on the island. The first ever to be born on the island and a strange tan and white combo that confused us since all the other horses were black or dark brown. The island is great for hiking. We kayaked over from the mainland. There are also some geocache spots on the island. The horses will let you feed them as well.

pull off at the small villages

    by hindu1936 Written Mar 21, 2009

While I can't remember where this is, I can tell you that it is 7 hours east of Spokane on 90, and just a hundred or so meters of the expressway. The small town has a great motel, good restaurant, and the gas station opens at 5:00 a.m. We didn't check the maps or GPS so stopped there at about 5:00 p.m. and got up early and two hours later, were in Yellowstone.

Drive the Going To the Sun Road

by KazigluBey Written Dec 20, 2003

Driving the historic Going to the Sun Road is off the beaten path for sure, it's in the middle of a large national park.

Sure there are alot of people that take this beautiful drive, however the park is large and the road long, so there is no problem finding a peaceful place you can have to yourselves.

If you like there are tour buses that run up and down the road.

The best scenic drives are off the Interstate. Dig out a map and go up the mountain range via the state highways. A nice little town to pass thourgh is Thompson Falls. Some of these towns are home to the mining industry. If you look closly, you'll see some of the old mines still standing.

If you travel about 30 miles east of Butte, there is a town called Cardwell, right next to Whitehall. Where every summer a group of volunteers put on a Lewis and Clark outdoor theatre show. It's very good! Especially under the sky watching the historical drama with Lewis and Clark be put to life. I recommend this for any one who likes Lewis and Clark or who wants to learn more about them.

FORTUNATELY, I SLEPT WELL. BUT THERE WAS NO QUESTION THAT CIRCUMSTANCES HAD CONSPIRED TO PREVENT ME FROM SUMMITING, AND, AT 7:30 AM, I STARTED HIKING BACK DOWN.

This was the view of lake McDonald from our cabin. We watched after dark as the fishermen continued to try to catch their limit. They used lanterns which gave away their location to us.

Most People take the interstate, but if you take Highway 2 across the northern part of the state, there is some great scenery as well. This old church is the near Chinook, Montana.
