    A Private Plane Airport

by DEBBBEDB Written Jul 21, 2010

When we were talking to the counterman in the little restaurant, he said this airport was mostly for private aviation. The rental car man also told us that they'd had some kind of meeting or fly-in at the airport the day before and some of the planes were still there. So I walked around and took some photos of them.

Later I found out that the fly-in commemorated the 75th anniversary of airmail service to West Yellowstone. The Montana Aeronautics Division had invited the Flying Museums in Rexburg, ID and the War Birds Museum in Driggs, ID

You can get a commercial flight to this airport, but only in the summer from Salt Lake City

    Fly In

West Yellowstone’s airport is THE closest airport to Yellowstone Park. WYS is the 8th largest of Montana’s 121 airports. It is one of the ten smoke jump bases for USFS Interagency Fire Control. The Cafe is named for the Smoke Jumpers. Primarily the airport serves private pilots.

The commercial flights from Salt Lake - Skywest Airlines (Delta Connection - photo 3 is the plane in Salt Lake that does this run) say that they run June 1st through September 30th, but the Skywest website says that they do not start until June 10th

    Friends from Hong Kong, Canada...

Friends from Hong Kong, Canada and US met at Utah to start our journey. Salt Lake City is the cloest place where you can find an international airport. We drove from Utah, to Idaoh, then to Wyoming to Montana. 7 hours driving but that was fun.

    Car Rental

Since we flew in to the West Yellowstone airport, we needed to rent a car. There are two car rental kiosks at the airport - Avis and Budget. We rented from Avis. They had a somewhat different gas policy - if we didn't drive 70 miles, they would charge us extra for gas.

Budget also has a place in West Yellowstone at 131 Dunraven Street -
West Yellowstone, MT 59758 They offer cars, mini-vans, and sport utility vehicles. Open all year. Free local pick-up and delivery. Unlimited mileage.

A possibly cheaper option which I did not explore is Big Sky Car Rental which also has snowcoach tours in the winter

    415 Yellowstone -
    West Yellowstone, MT 59758
    Phone: (406) 646-9564
    Toll Free: (800) 426-7669

Free pick up and delivery to the airport and local campground. All size cars, compacts to vans. Unlimited mileage.

    Yellowstone Airport Montana

by KimberlyAnn Updated Dec 28, 2011

The Yellowstone Airport, code WYS, is a state owned public use airport, that is located a little over 1 mile north of West Yellowstone’s business district. This is a small commercial airport, with a large amount of its air traffic from private planes. No large jets fly in and out of West Yellowstone, so if you do not like small computer type airplanes, this airport is not for you. This is, however, the closest and most convenient airport to Yellowstone National Park. This airport is a seasonal facility, open from around June 1 and ending around September 30. (dates may vary from year to year, so check their web page) It offers two or three daily flights from and to the commercial airport located in Salt Lake City, Utah, via Delta’s Sky West Airlines. There is a small café within the airport. An interesting note about this airport is that it is also a smoke jump base for the USFS Interagency Fire Control.

There are car rental services available at the airport for Avis Car Rental (phone 406-646-7635), and Budget Car rental (phone 406.646.5156). There is also a second Budget Car rental in West Yellowstone, at 131 Dunraven Street.

Convenience, Can Be Worth the Extra Cost
