Fort Robinson State Park is a good place to spend a day. Crazy Horse surrendered there on 6 May 1877, and was mortally wounded that September while resisting imprisonment. In January 1879, the Fort was the scene of a major battle as the result of the Cheyenne Outbreak led by Chief Dull Knife. In the 20th Century, Fort Robinson became the world's largest military remount depot, and during the second World War, was the site of a
K-9 corps training center, and German POW camp.

Chadron is within an hour's drive of The Badlands, the Black Hills, and the Pine Ridge recreation area. Rent a car and spend a few days at driving through these parks, the scenery and wildlife are incredible. There are excellent mountain biking trails in the Pine Ridge.

$9 as of August 2013. This is a family run affair with a nice atmosphere and a varied menu. I had difficulty choosing between the blackened catfish and the veal parmesan. My waitress, Melissa was a delight. Hours are 6 AM to 9 PM daily but open till 10 PM on Friday. I enjoyed my Veal Parmesan. On my previous visit I had the Blackened Catfish which was also quite good. I recommend this place! Bar attached!

Favorite Dish: Loved the Blackened Catfish and the Veal Parmesan!

Fly into the bustling Chadron Municipal Airport. I worked there for the now-defunct GP Express airlines as well as at the FBO next door, L&D Aero. There are daily commuter flights to CDR from Denver.

If headed west of Chadron to Ft. Robinson, take a little time to see Toadstool Park. It is very similar to the Badlands of S. Dakota but on a smaller scale and much closer. Toadstool Park is noted for unusual geologic formations and scientifically valuable fossil deposits. It also contains the longest known mammal trackway of the Oligocene epoch. This trackway, over one mile, 15 featured in a new interpretive kiosk and a new self-guided trail brochure completed the spring of 1999. A one-mile loop trail from the campground highlights many examples of eroded clay/sandstone formations. A reconstructed sod house provides a look into the past when homesteaders on the prairie used the only abundant building material available.
To get there, travel 4 miles north of Crawford, Nebraska, on State Highway 2 and 71, then 15 miles northwest on Toadstool Road.

Carhenge in Alliance, about 30 mi. south of Chadron, is patterned after Stonhenge in England. Not much to it but it is a good photo op.

Check out Whitney lake about 5 miles west of the Chadron airport in Dawes County Nebraska, and 1 1/2 miles west of the city of Whitney. It is a private irrigation reservoir so access is limited.
The lake has approximately 900 surface acres of water, and is a very scenic lake. The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists Whitney Lake as containing Channel Catfish, Crappie, Perch, Walleye and White Bass.
