Columbus Things to Do

  • by jhannah Written Nov 2, 2005

About 5 miles north of town is Lake North. There is water skiing, jet skis, seasonal fishing for crappie, sauger, white bass, and cats, no beach but boat ramps. Only decent water for miles. There is also a great bike path where you can ride a 6.5 mile route without conflict with high speed traffic. RV and tent camping, no water but free electricity. Picnicking, shelter, lots of shade trees, clean, really nice for what it is.

    Columbus Theater

Downtown is kind of cute, like many other midwest downtowns--not exactly hopping. There are some fun shops, and the courthouse, and the library, and the square, and THIS photo--the old theatre. As far as I know they're not using it for anything. It's a shame. But it's got this cool relief mural on it of Native Americans and who I guess would be Christopher Columbus. Columbus, NE--Chris Columbus--get it?

The "Freedom Eagle," perched atop steel sent from the World Trade Center wreakage, and is a memorial that...

"We will never forget...we shall overcome."

    Husker's

$16 as of August 2013. This restaurant looks pretty nice on the outside and the interior is very nice. It looks classy with well dressed waitresses and a host in a tie; but they have no dress code for the patrons so you can "come as you are". The menu includes steak, seafood, pasta and a few others. Hours are 5 PM to 10 PM Monday through Thursday and 5 PM to 10:30 PM Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.

Favorite Dish: I had catfish which had too much breading; but the meal was okay. The steaks might be better.

    Runza Restaurant

If you're not from Nebraska (or Kansas?) you may never have heard of Runza--a popular fast food restaurant here in this state. And my favorite.

Yum yum yum. I go whenever I can. Runza started in Lincoln.

Favorite Dish: A Runza is a beef and cabbage mixture in a bread shell. If you don't particularly care for cabbage, don't skip it! Try it anyway. I love the things!

Plus they have slurpee type drinks. Mmm.

If you are determined not to try the AMAZING Runza, they also make probably the best fast food burger in town.

Columbus Warnings and Dangers

Mid to late spring are wary times in Columbus due to the amount of Tornados that touch down every year. If you are cought in one your hotel is not the place to be. You need to get to a place that has a storm shelter or has a relatively deep basement. Usually one is coming when it's a warmer night out and you hear the sirens blaring.
