Favorite thing: Dakota City is a town of about 1900 (up 4% since 2000) located between the Missouri River and Nebraska Highway 35 in Eastern Nebraska near the borders with South Dakota and Iowa. Dakota City is the county seat of Dakota County. Dakota County was formed in 1855 and both the city and the county were named after the Dakota Sioux.

The Territorial Church has been here since 1860 and was the first Lutheran Church built in Nebraska. The building was designed by local carpenter, Augustus T. Haase and exemplifies the steadfast spirit of the pioneers and their devotion to their religion. The Territorial Church (AKA The Emmanuel Lutheran Church) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
