Favorite thing: IN SEPTEMBER OF 2006, BIZJOURNAL.COM RANKED THE 577 SMALL CITIES IN THE U.S. FOR QUALITY OF LIFE. THESE CITIES WERE FROM 10,000 TO 50,000 IN POPULATION.
KEARNEY FINISHED #1 IN NEBRASKA, #11 IN THE ENTIRE MIDWEST, AND #31 IN THE UNITED STATES.
Fondest memory: FACTORS IN THIS RANKING WERE: A STRONG ECONOMY, LIGHT TRAFFIC, POPULATION AND INCOME INCREASES, MODERATE COST OF LIVING, FIRST-CLASS EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS, EASY ACCESS TO BIG-CITY ATTRACTIONS.
IN ADDITION TO A 77% INCREASE IN BUSINESS GROWTH THE PAST 5 YEARS, KEARNEY WAS RECOGNIZED FOR HAVING A WORKFORCE IN WHICH NEARLY 30% HAD A BACHELOR'S DEGREE OR MORE.
DURING THE RECESSION OF 2008-2012, KEARNEY WAS BARELY AFFECTED AND MAINTAINED AN UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OF 4% OR LESS.

Favorite thing: Okay, it's spelled Kearney. In English that can be at least two pronunciations. Here in Nebraska, it 'kar-nee'. That's Car like the automobile, followed by knee, the joint in the middle of your leg. Simple, maybe. It's the name of the Colonel who lead the 1st military expedition along the Oregon Trail and made recommendations about where and if there should be military forts along the route. See Fort Laramie, Wyoming, which he did not think was needed.

Favorite thing: Just for your information, one campus of CCC (Central Community College) is located in Kearney. It is primarily devoted to nursing education. Other campuses are in Hastings and Grand Island. Our oldest son graduated from the CCC in Hastings with a degree in Horticulture, and we were quite impressed with the education he received there.

Fondest memory: CCC in Kearney is located on the east side of 2nd Avenue, roughly at 34th street or so.

Favorite thing: Well, I hope you don't need this place while visiting Kearney, but if you do, its a good place to be. Good Samaritan Hospital has an excellent reputation for its medical services. It actually serves an area the size of Indiana, and it has a top-of-the-line medical helicopter as part of its services. They have an excellent emergency room.
I recently had to have shoulder surgery by a Kearney surgeon. The walls of his exam rooms were lined with pictures of professional baseball players and college and pro basketball players who have had him do their surgeries.
Good Samaritan Hospital is located along 31st street just on the east side of 2nd Avenue in the north-central part of town.

Favorite thing: Kearney has a lot of very nice neighborhoods with some very fine houses that are priced on the high side for Nebraska, but on the low side nationally. According to "Sperlings Best Places", the cost of living in Kearney is 81.6% of the national average. Take a drive around Kearney and see for yourself. Much of the growth is to the northwest and northeast, but there is growth taking place in all directions.
Fondest memory: People tend to take a great deal of pride in their lawns and yards, working hard to keep them green and attractive looking.

Favorite thing: This is perhaps where your first stop should be as you visit Kearney. Here you can find maps, pamphlets, and you can ask questions of helpful people as well.
Take exit #272 (The Kearney exit) from the Interstate and go north. Be in the right hand lane. At the stoplight at 11th Avenue, turn right and then immediately south on the service road. The Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will be on your left. Their phone # is (308) 237-3101

Favorite thing: TRAVELLERS OFTEN are looking for a post office. The Kearney Post Office can be found in the east-central part of town, at the corner of 25th St. (which is highway 30) and Avenue E. It is on the southeast corner of that intersection. Turn south on Avenue E for 1/2 block to enter the parking lot.
By the way, the people who work the windows at this post office are very nice and helpful.

Favorite thing: Yanney Heritage Park is Kearney's newest green space development. In fact it is still being developed. In the park is an observation tower where you can see for miles around.
To get to Yanney Park from 2nd Avenue, go to 11th Street (in the south part of town) and then go west on 11th Street until you see the tower, which will be south of 11th street. Turn in there.
Enjoy the park!
